Help identifying my older Eastman A-2 AC23373 – Horsehide or Steerhide?

Hi guys,

I’ve had this Eastman A-2, size 48 for several years, but unfortunately it has spent almost all that time in my wardrobe.

I’m 190 cm / 6’3” and around 104 kg / 229 lbs. I love A-2 jackets, but this one simply doesn’t work perfectly for my proportions – the body is a little roomy while the sleeves and body length are too short.

It has therefore been worn only a handful of times and is still in excellent, virtually flawless condition, including the leather, lining and knits.

The label reads W535 AC23373.

Measurements:
P2P 67 cm / 26.4”
Shoulders 53 cm / 20.9”
Sleeves 65 cm / 25.6”
Back 68 cm / 26.8”

I’m now considering selling it, but before I do, I’d really like to know exactly what I have.

Does anyone know when Eastman produced this AC23373 version and whether it is horsehide or steerhide? The leather is surprisingly soft and supple and doesn’t really feel like the horsehide jackets I know.

Any information about the model, approximate age and leather would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
Stephan

Today I got Feedback from Esstman.
What do you thing - "what's it worth"?

Hello Stephan,

Thank you for providing such detailed information and pictures. It can be quite hard to age one of our jackets as they don’t have any lot numbers and lack age features.

The jacket is an Eastman A-2 Havana - Size 48. We started using Crown Zips in our Eastman jackets in 2007. If the jacket hasn’t had it's zip replaced then it could be pre 2007.

The leather I’m not 100% sure it can be tricky to tell what leather it is from a picture. The jacket looks in immaculate condition, the knitwear looks brand new and there isn’t many creases in the sleeves.

Reading online the differences between the characteristics of Horsehide and Steerhide overtime might help.
Horsehide has sharper more irregular grain characteristic where steer hide has clearer more regular uniform grain visibility with softer rounder more rolling creases.

Unfortunately there isn’t much we can go off to identify the jacket part from the zip being a Talon it could be pre 2007. My apologies I’m unable to provide any further information.

If a beautiful looking jacket! I hope you are still enjoying wearing it after many years.
