I LOVE the new Akubra, Neophyte. Is it a light weight felt? :eusa_clap :eusa_clap
I'm not sure if Akubra's Heritage felt is lighter than their Imperial felt. It is, however, actually light enough that I don't notice it's on some of the time lol. This could be good or bad, depending on the situation [huh].

I actually hated the original appearance of the hat. The taper made the hat appear a tad too small. A bit of re-creasing, though, and it's become the favorite of the bunch (if only by a hare :p ):

Thanks JoshBru! Everyone's looking sharp today :). DRB, I like that warm grey VS, you look at home in it (yes, I know you actually are at home, but you know what I mean :p ).

Despite the Heritage felt being a denser, nicer felt than the normal Imperial quality, the Lightning Ridge is actually lighter in weight than my Akubra Camp Draft (and that's including the leather band and opal stone ).

That new crease looks perfect for the hat. Ive never been a big fan of the cattleman crease on any hat. Even cowboy hats kind of make me cringe when I see the cattlemans crease. The taper makes it look like a step pyramid on someones head. But with that new crease on the Lightning Ridge, it makes it look like a different hat. A better hat might I add. Very nice. :eusa_clap :eusa_clap

Thanks so much!!!
I feel much more secure in the hat with the new shape. I nearly shipped it back after I got it, but since I'd already worn it and gotten sweat and loose hair in it, I figured I wouldn't try to jip DavidMorgan. I resigned myself to trying to salvage the hat, and boy am I glad I did :)!

Originally it was a center dent with shallow-ish side dents. All I did was pop up the back of the center dent, smooth it around into a quasi-teardrop, and pinched the hell out of the front (I think Akubra lays the stiffener on thick on their "factory bashed" hats).

I don't think it's all that atypical. The majority of guys that I see out and about wearing felt hats (which aren't many) are wearing an outback-style hat or some derivation thereof, with a fedora shape, wide brim and thin leather band. They're much more common than dress fedoras, at least in my neck of the woods.

That is my experience too, and I would add, it applies to any dress fedora, stingies included.

Dress fedoras will normaly stand out, because the few hats to be seen are mostly cloth stingies, straw stingies (both of the former often of the "fashion" style, with very stingy brims, loud colours or patterns, etc), wool cheapies, outback hats, and the like. Even a modern dress hat, with the more tapered crown and smaller dimensions, looks markedly different, enough for even people completely unfamiliar with everything related to hats to notice.

If you wear the hat with a minimally dressy outfit, the effect multiplies, because the above hats are generally coupled with very casual combos. But even if you go casual, too, the dress fedora still stands out in comparison to the other styles.

(Note that I am not comdemning the fashion style hats; although rarely do I see one I like, I'm fine with other people using them. I just say that dress hats are noticed)

I too like the fact that you can wear the hat with casual clothes and look great. That color looks like it would go with just about anything! I also like to ride my bike through town sporting a fedora. The women seem to especially take notice, and everyone seems just a little bit more courteous . I'll have to put the bike away soon. Frost warning tonight.

I myself have found a bike incredibly convenient on campus, but I'm having trouble figuring out how to keep the hat from blowing off...

Campdrafts have a wind cord...that is, if you don't cut them off. ;)

That's true, I see a lot of westerns, straws and outbacks here in Tennessee. I have also noticed that the several times I've made eye contact with another person at home in their lid, a nod is exchanged.

Oh, and lol to that last statement.

It all depends upon geography. Now, go south to Kissimmee/St. Cloud and it's loaded with real cowboys wearing hats.

What's scary is the large number of snowbirds and/or retirees we have in Florida. Most of the time when you see them wearing hats... they're cheap fashion fedoras!

Except for the old guy in my neighborhood who I recently saw sporting a straw sun hat... which he had spray painted SILVER!

handlebar bart, you know how to pull a hat with a checkered vest! I like that style because when it is chilly outside and you want to wear those comfy vests, you can still pull a hat brilliantly, and that inspires me, cause in Québec, the winter is almost here!
