What cigar (or pipe) did you smoke today?

Well - I attempted my first pipe today, and perhaps it was as successful as it could be, although it would be nice to be able to fast forward from being a total novice to being able to truly relax and enjoy it. I anticipate that will be a long time coming.

I took heed of some advice I received here on a previous post and picked up a Peterson briar, and my first tobacco was Chelsea Morning from G L Pease. The fragrance of the tobacco was a lot more smoky than I’d anticipated from the descriptions I’d read (the Latakia, I presume) but that taste wasn’t overly strong when smoking it.

It took a long time and a number of attempts to get the pipe lit, and I suspect I should have both rubbed it out a bit and let it dry for a while but I forgot about all that and skipped straight to attempting a three part packing with the tobacco, and I suspect it was not nearly densely enough packed in the end (although at the time I felt that it was). Once lit it stayed burning pretty well.

The first flavour note I became aware of was a taste of walnut, but other than that I was mostly getting ashy smoke and worrying about my tongue! Funnily enough though, after finishing the pipe I could discern more flavours in my mouth, including a pleasant and persistent sweetness, and to my surprise a faint edge of mint; and all the flavours came out even more while sipping water afterwards - which is intriguing.

Any tips from others who can remember being a neophyte, and especially people who’ve smoked this particular tobacco would be appreciated.

I also have a cob pipe and an aromatic to try (as requested by my wife) but that is for another day.

Haha! I'm at a similar point as a relative noob. I enjoyed a pipe 40 years ago and am just now getting reacquainted. Turns out I had forgotten something important in the interim.

I had recently been smoking aromatics. Local blends that smell great but they taste something like the air in a spare tire and don't offer a noticeable nicotine bump. Yesterday I tried a Per Jensen / Brothers in Arms blend and I had forgotten that if you're not used to a strong nicotine hit there's a very high likelihood that you may find yourself in a personal emergency and have your own pipes cleaned in short order.

It was a much closer call than I'm used to.

I had a similar issue with my last cigar. I’d smoked cigars fairly regularly years ago (20 or so) but also smoked cigarettes back then and had some resilience and conditioning when it came to nicotine. The last cigar I smoked was about 2 1/2 years ago, and I enjoyed - and then after I finished it grew greener and greener for an hour, then was physically ill several times So much for age bringing wisdom.
