Suzanne - Gus Arnheim & Ork, waxing in Hollywood in 1933.
Bouncy wouldja-like-to-take-a-walk tune with snapping patter from the latest edition of the Rhythm Boys.

Go to the link to preview the whole 2-CD set - no snippets! It's really a good one for us late 20s-early 30s types.

Gus Arnheim and his Coconut Grove Orchestra -- All I Want Is Just One Girl (1930)
vocal by Fred MacMurray

I also have on one of my cassettes part of a 1932 air check of a broadcast by the Gus Arnheim band from the Coconut Grove with Bing Crosby and Lois Whiteman attempting to vocalize What Is It? while being heckled by Jack Oakey in the audience!

?????

But they have neither Tenor Banjo, Brass Bass, nor Saxophone, so how could they possibly...

Have you ever tried the A & P Gipsys, or perhaps Barbecue Joe and His Hot Dogs?

lol

What's really scary is that to some people, The Clash ARE an old timey band and about as relevant as Barbecue Joe, The Red Hot Peppers, or The Original New Orleans Jass Band.

I love Mr. Shankly. It really catches Morrisey's cheeky - and sometimes even arrogant - approach to lyrics. Johnny Marr's rhythm guitar work is great, too.

That's what I like about the group and while I was despondent over their breakup back then, they never outstayed their welcome like other bands I loved then (R.E.M.) *cough*...;)

I've also learned to appreciate the biting wit of Morrissey; it's not all gloom and doom--it never was, was it? lol

Oh, and "Ask" is officially my "new" favorite Smiths song. It only took twenty-four years...

"writing frightening verse to a buck-toothed girl in Luxembourg..."

A scanty bit of a thing
With a decorative ring
That wouldn't cover the head of a goose
As Rose collects the money in a canister
Who comes sliding down the banister ?
The vicar in a tutu
He's not strange
He just wants to live his life this way

 :D

Heino & Andre Rieu - Blau blüht der Enzian 2009

Beg yer pardon, but that really laid me flat on the ground...

Heino (together with Heintje) was the bane of my childhood. As soon as my mother caught me red handed in the midst of some evil mischievous action she threatened to send me to bed without supper - but with Heino turned way up on the HiFi. Those dark shades haunt my dreams to this very day.

And Andre Rieu...well, if I had kids, I'm afraid that I'd do to them with Mr. Rieu what my mother did to me with Heino...(if there are any psychotherapists around here, I'd love to hear your opinion...) :D ;)

Is this the same Heino that you're talking about? The poster boy for bad album covers.

Here's another one of them. In this part of the galaxy he is known (and dreaded) by the name of Heintje:

Now playing, Frankie Trumbauer and his Orchestra in 1930 with an utterly wonderful arrangement of "I Like To Do Things For You," which sounds like it was swiped out of the after-hours section of the Whiteman band book when Pops wasn't looking. The vocal is credited to Jeannie Lang, the Whiteman ensemble's cutie-pie novelty vocalist of the moment, but I'd be willing to bet folding money that it's actually Mildred Bailey doing a taking-the-mickey imitation of Jeannie Lang. Oh what mischief those kids get into when the boss ain't around.

Next, ahead to 1938 and another great side that doesn't turn up often -- Ozzie Nelson and His Orchestra with an archly comic version of "Two Sleepy People." While the Bob Hope-Shirley Ross version is definitive, this one is a laugh-out-loud hilarious parody of that version, as Ozzie and Harriet sing the first chorus as a couple of starry-eyed romantics, the second as a bitter, battling old married couple who can't stand the sight of each other, and then a final chorus as a pair of tottering old folks who're in it for the long haul. And to think some people say Ozzie didn't know anything about comedy.

La Fornarina -- La Llave (The Key) (circa 1912)

fornarina.jpg

I was intrigued by this recording when I first heard it a few years ago. La Fornarina -- aka Consuelo Bello (1885-1915) -- was a Spanish variety artiste in the early part of the last century. The tune is that of the old English music hall standard The Honeysuckle and the Bee (1901).

(Chorus)
You are my honey honeysuckle
I am the bee
I'd like to sip the honey sweet
From those red lips you see
I love you dearly, dearly
And I hope that you love me
You are my honey honeysuckle
I am the bee

I'd hardly say that Wingy Manone was irrelevant.

For me, at least.

I must admit that I'm somewhat bemused to find that the music that I loathed back in College is now considered to be "Old Timey".

Ah, yes, The Flying Lizards and The Knack are now quite nearly as obscure as the B. F. Goodrich Silvertown Cord Dance Orchestra (you know, the band that featured the Silver-Masked Tenor).

Sic transit and all that rot!

About half way through Atomic Cocktail podcast. Wide variety of lounge-y music, rocknroll, kinda oddball rocknroll, and so on. DJ'd by Vic Tripp who has overamped delivery with some kind of neo-retro-jive. Somehow connected to the The Cool and the Crazy, with the Frostbite 500; I think I remember listening to an original OTA version on KCRW in the 80s.

Addenda
Addendum no. 1: The show is more oriented to rock and roll. It's sort of like a tribute to rock radio, with comedy bits inserted as commercials.
Addendum no. 2: This is the work of one of the two originators of The Cool and the Crazy, who uses Vic Tripp as his professional name.

If the university college didn't classify all music as 'noise' under its Quietness Doctrine, I would be listening to various pieces by Saint Saens. As it is I'm humming his Bachannale from Samson et Delilah and pretending my 2x3m cell-like room is the Palais Garnier. I'm not convinced it is.
