If the university college didn't classify all music as 'noise' under its Quietness Doctrine, I would be listening to various pieces by Saint Saens. As it is I'm humming his Bachannale from Samson et Delilah and pretending my 2x3m cell-like room is the Palais Garnier. I'm not convinced it is.

Beg yer pardon, but that really laid me flat on the ground...

Heino (together with Heintje) was the bane of my childhood. As soon as my mother caught me red handed in the midst of some evil mischievous action she threatened to send me to bed without supper - but with Heino turned way up on the HiFi. Those dark shades haunt my dreams to this very day.

And Andre Rieu...well, if I had kids, I'm afraid that I'd do to them with Mr. Rieu what my mother did to me with Heino...(if there are any psychotherapists around here, I'd love to hear your opinion...)

I am sorry you had Heino as a punishment .My father played Heino on tapes in the car when we were children and so I guess I link it to happy days out visiting new places (which I still enjoy) although perhaps some relatives on Sundays could have been better at home.lol but happy days non the less. He was better than Willie Nelson at the time, however I like some Willie Nelson now.

I cannot stand "Needles and Pins" or Neil Diamond and Johnny Mathis for the same reasons as yourself. Maybe I should have behaved myself Mind you I used to get my own back playing punk in the bedroom, (TURN THAT MUSIC DOWN!!!, I cannot hear myself think, wait until your father get's home!)

Andre Rieu, well it's just a clear version of the song with Heino and him so that's the one. You will never change my opinion of Heino though.

Next sir, you'll be telling me you dislike Hansi Hinterseer too!!!

Actually the only music I do not like now is Blues and hip-hop, but as "one man's ceiling / is another man's floor" (Oh, I forgot add Paul Simon to the list of sent to bed muisc lol ) hey ho, each to their own.

Starting off with Bing and Johnny Mercer and 1938 with their unforgettable ode to keeping sassy kids in their place, "Small Fry." One of the kids at work has become exceedingly fond of this tune, especially the bit about slipping castor oil in Papa's beer. Honestly, they always learn the wrong lesson.

Next, following a commercial for Pall Mall cigarettes ("It's MODERN DESIGN that makes the big difference!"), back to 1933 as Mildred Bailey and the Dorsey Brothers slack off with "Lazy Bones." How you 'spect to get your days' work done? Leave it for Lizzie to do, that's how. Bah.

While normally I absolutely detest the campy, Americanized version of tango, as typified by the song Hernando's Hideaway, I do like this version by Argentine bandleader Florindo Sassone which does give it more of an authentic flavor.

Re: Tango. I think it was the Europeans who camped it up first. But that's neither here nor there.
What I'm listening to now: The good old Big Broadcast, on WFUV FM in New Yoprk, OR www.wfuv.org streaming.
But last night I was listening to my newest fave, "Group Harmony Review", also on WFUV, Saturday nights at midnight. Great 50's Doo Wop. He actually starts in the late 40's with early stuff that lead into Doo Wop, and goes all the way into the 60's. Great great stuff.
