I recently picked up this luggage decal. The other Little America ephemera that came with it dates from 1941, so this likely does as well.

I’ve spent the night at Little America (the original one, out where the deer and the antelope play) on a couple-three occasions. It’s a hotel/restaurant/gas station/etc. The place is very clean, very well-maintained, not at all trendy. I expect I’ll stay there again.

You can kinda rely on it being cold in Little America, Wyoming (a census-designated place, population 68, give or take, elevation 6,424 feet) on January 6.
Little America took its name from the Antarctic base camp set up by Robert Byrd, hence the penguins in the logo.

I just read (and verified) that this place is listed for sale — $224,900. If I lived near Bedford County, Pennsylvania, I’d at least check it out.

A dozen freestanding cabins plus a separate house. Looks to be in turn-key condition. If it were within a hundred miles of here, you’d have to add a zero to that listing price.

I’d think that anyone actually looking to make a viable business of it would almost have to try not to. You wouldn’t even have to turn a couple G’s a month to make the nut. I don’t know what utilities run (a wad, in the winter, I’d guess), and I don’t minimize the dedication it would take. But still, it’s only $225K. You can’t get a ground floor condo with a view of the dumpster for that kinda money around here.

That’s assuming there are enough people like us among the general population who would seek out lodgings such as this place over the chain motels. Maybe that’s assuming too much. But I don’t think so.

Should be Richard Byrd, not Robert. Robert was a long-serving US senator from West Virginia.

Here's one from my neck of the woods. Torisevan kahvimaja (Toriseva Coffee Hut) in Virrat, Finlandia. Opened in 1936 by Lotta Svärd organisation ( female section of the finnish Civil Guard). Still open, owned by same family sinne 1951.
