I bought a box, but it seems too small for the hat. Is yours small also? Did they make a ladies' Strat? Maybe I have one of those boxes.

Confused in Atlanta.

The boxes were made intensionally small, both as a streamlined ad gimmic for the stratoliner airplane, and to keep the brim curl of the hat, with the sides slightly more upturned, as I understand it.

Thanks, Jimmy. Very interesting thread. At least I know I have the correct box.

I may try putting mine in the box and see what the brim looks like afterwards.
I don't think I'll care much for an exaggerated curl.....but the hat in the photos looked fine. Go figure.

Now I have to find me a DC-3 pin WITHOUT the TWA writing on it !!!!

I am seeking learned advice from the exclusive club. I'm in the process of ordering my first hat from Art and I'm considering my options. I'm in love with the Stratoliner, thanks to this and other threads. Should I have Art make me a clone, or should I get a different hat from Art and start scanning Ebay for a "real" Strat? I worry that if I were lucky enough to find an original in my size on Ebay I'd have some pretty $tiff competition, possibly from this esteemed club.:) Perhaps the answer is "go figure it out kid, and don't bother us", but if anyone has an opinion I'd like to hear it.

Depending on your size, you might have to pay nearly as much on ebay to get an original as to have a custom made. They're really very common hats, but there's a huge demand for them. Non- stetson hats which are essentially the same go for a lot less money because they don't have the name, which people are willing to pay an enormous premium for.

Thanks. That may be my answer-just have Art make a clone and then wear it without worry. Are his clones pretty close? I am sure they are of great quality. I'm looking at his samples but don't see a color that looks terribly close to the fawn colored pics I see in this thread.

Ask him about the color. He's very responsive. I just received a clone of an Adam Majestic I wanted because the ribbon treatment was unusual. He had no problem.

3 month wait though. But its worth it.

My vote is for an original. There's just something about the felt and the logo that nothing else has. If you're in love with the Strat, and your OC enough to be on the Lounge, chances are that you won't be satisfied until you get one. ;)

What is your size? If you don't have an enormous melon, you should be able to pick up one for about 1/3 the price of a "WOA".....then give Art a call and order a one-of-a-kind beauty from the Master.

Welcome to the Lounge.

Thanks Randy. Yes, I am OC, and I figure I'll get an original someday. Perhaps I'll get an Akubra Campdraft for now, another hat from Art, and start scanning Ebay for a vintage 7 3/8 Stratoliner. I'll have to add that to my long list of items I constantly scan for on Ebay. My wife trys to tell me not to scan Ebay so I won't know what I'm missing. Ha.

One Opinion

I think the world of Art and his beautiful hats. I own a couple and I'm in line for another. A couple of weeks ago, I scored a Stratoliner on eBay. Upon receipt I sent it off to Art for a complete restoration.

When it comes back, probably as beautiful as on the day it was manufactured, it will still be an original Stratoliner, complete with all of the imprimaturs. It will never be a VS hat from Art.

The point of all this is to suggest you wait for a real Stratoliner to come along. There is nothing like owning a real _______ (you fill in the blank). The hat Art would reproduce would probably look just like a Stratoliner to the extent that modern materials would allow, but it would never be a real one.

Conversely, if you order a VS hat from Art, you will own an authentic Art Fawcett VS hat, which is as fine a hat as you can buy that was made today. A hat from Art is its own piece of heaven.

If it were me (and you are in the same boat I was in up until a couple of weeks ago), I would get an original Art VS hat and keep your eye peeled for your Stratoliner. You'll find it eventually and when you do, I think you'll agree with me that there is nothing like the real thing, be it a Stratoliner or a VS. Best, Sam

Thank you tortswon. I think that is wise advice. Why "waste" Art's skill in making a copy when he could be making you something unique and special that fellows in 50 years will be bidding thousands for. It would just be a "civil wrong", wouldn't it? :)
