Exactly. But despite what we think, Resistol seems to have its staunch defenders. There must be quality there, I won't argue. I still don't like the name though.

Thank you, sir I've come to the conclusion that I'll probably leave it as is. Wore it today to walk down to the post office in the village, came in quite handy in the sudden rain shower

Roundup Collection

I won this Resistol Roundup on Ebay a week ago:

I wanted a full kettle-curl brim, and this seemed like a very nice hat per the pictures. As I waited on it to arrive, I decided that if the liner was sewn in that I would leave it be, except for maybe changing the telescope crown to a teardrop or DTD. The liner was not sewn in . . . now its a flare-crown Roundup with full kettle-curl brim!

I like the liner in this one, but not as well as the Byer-Rolnick crest liners. I REALLY don't care for the fuzzy band on this hat, maybe need to take the nice leather band from the Stagecoach I posted earlier and put it on this Roundup, as that Stagecoach really needs a medium brown ribbon about 1 1/2 inch wide.

Thanks, hatophile. I intend to make a 'real' flare-crown at Major Moore's when I can shake loose to visit Covington, TN (Buckaroo Hatters). While I wait, I play with these to see how close I can get. I am not happy with the sharpness of the crown edge, flatness of the top, and can appreciate that getting that flare-crown to be crisp and taught might involve some serious muscular effort pulling on the felt over the puzzle block.

Texas Department of Corrections "Walkin' Boss" Resistol

Y'all may have seen this one on the bay a couple of weeks ago. Given my line of work, and my love for the mid-century South, I just couldn't resist (no pun intended).

From the style of lining, I'm guessing this hat dates from the mid sixties. It is very similar in size and proportion to an older Open Road. It has a 2.75 inch brim and a 4.75 inch crown. Of course, the band is different than that of an OR and the Resistol's brim has a raw edge.

The old girl has clearly seen some service. Its liner is stained. It has moth bites on the underside of the brim. The reeding beneath the sweat is missing some parts. Still, its one of those hats that you wish could talk...just to hear the stories it could tell. While I understand that Dallas PD officers were wearing San Antonios in 1963, I can't help but wonder if this hat was somewhere near the action on that terrible November day.

Rolnick Hats Custom-Craft

I picked this up and I know it's not a Resistol, but I'm looking for a little input from the experts. This is what I know about Resistol from the Resistol website -In the early 1920's a young millionaire, E.R. Byer sold his business in Michigan and traveled South to further his fortune and investment. His investment was a brilliant young hat maker, Harry Rolnick, who was operating a small hat factory. E.R. Byer was one of Rolnick's customers and was so impressed by his professionalism, flair for fashion and devotion to quality that in 1927 the firm of Byer-Rolnick was founded in Dallas, Texas. The company produced men's felt hats in Western and Dress styling's, both were marketed under the newly created brand name "Resistol Hats," meaning to resist- all weather. And I also came across this on my searches - Resistol had its genesis with Harry Rolnick, who moved with his family to Dallas in the early 1900s after growing up in a Jewish neighborhood in Brooklyn. By 1917, the Rolnicks were operating a hat renovation shop in downtown Dallas. In 1926, with a $60,000 stake from a Dallas family, Rolnick founded a company to make hats he designed. A year later, Rolnick and Ed Byer, a retired machine parts millionaire, took over the firm, renamed it the Byer-Rolnick Co. and went into business with $100,000 in capital. Rolnick began marketing the guaranteed Resistol brand in the 1930s. His patented interior leather band allowed for expansion to resist confining contact with the head and the sweaty brows it created.

I guess what I am asking for is a bit of help dating the hat, it has characteristics of being from the 40's, but could it be from 1926, the first and only year Rolnick was in business for himself, or according to one of the statements above, they did not start marketing the "Resistol" brand until the 1930s, could this be pre Resistol marketing. My other thought is could it be a custom or second brand hat that was marketed toward reatail outlets? Any input is appreciated.
