G’day All, I’m a new member but repeat visitor to the Fedora Lounge and I must say there are many cool hats on this website but not really many larger sized hats for sale. So i figured this thread could be that. I don’t have anything to sell myself but I am in search of westerns, really any brand 1900s and beyond in a size 7 5/8 please feel free to post any potential hats here! For us with bigger heads thanks! And let me know if this is a acceptable new thread! (Picture is a 70s 3x Resistol tall pines I own in 7 3/4!)

As a newbie you might have to build up some trust & good will by participating in like threads before you get much response to your request. And if you are outside the US keep in mind shipping charges. If you are looking for something on the cheap then it’s a waste of time. I quit offering 5/8, 3/4, 7/8 hats from my collection a long time ago..

Thanks for the response! Like I said I am new to actually posting so thanks for letting me know there’s a reputation system in play on this forum. In regards to pricing, I’ll never turn down a good cheap deal but considering larger vintage hats are scarce I’d pay fair. The 70s tall pines I paid 200 + shipping on that one. If you feel like slimming down you’re collection I’d be interested in lighter color westerns in 7 5/8s or 7 3/4s

Hey, Dan!
Welcome aboard, sir. I applaud your efforts to uncover the rare ones in a hurry. What you will soon come to realize is that while most if us here are happy and willing to assist new folks in their hat hunt, it still takes time, especially in your size. I’m a generous (not “scant”) 7-3/4, XLO, and my hat experience has waxed and waned since 1969. It takes patience, perseverance, persistence, and yes, luck…
We’re here to help. Post ‘em if you got ‘em.

Time is definitely on your side, my friend!

Maybe people on average were a little smaller due to nutrition issues.

ChatGPT seems to think this is survivor bias. More of the smaller sizes were made, so more survived. Larger hats were maybe always less common, so maybe people with 7+ heads wore their hats into mush, whereas people in the easy to find sizes could swap out hats whenever they wanted and those hats were more likely to survive. Sounds reasonable to me; no idea if it’s accurate.

Also shrinkage over time. A lot of 7+ hats don’t stay 7+ so functionally the size pool drifts downward over time. No hats ever get bigger by accident.

And collector filtering - those of us who need larger sizes buy them when we see them, so there are less available for less time.

May I ask why?
A newbie shows up & posts in the OR thread that he wants an OR size 7-3/4. He has just learned that Stetson has not made or offered that size in several yrs. I posted that I have a nice 7-3/4 in a 3X. The next day I unboxed it, took a new set of 6-7 pictures including all tags & head measurements, & posted them. He never even acknowledged my effort. I know it wasn’t that my price was too high because I never even priced it to him. Within a wk or so he was gone & I don’t believe he has posted since. I’m not a hat flipper. I won’t ever bother again, especially for someone I don’t even know. He obviously didn’t want one very bad.
