I've been getting more and more reluctant using my hat stretcher(s). Other than giving a hat a little nudge in the right direction I find it doesn't do the hat any good trying to stretch it up more than half a size maximum.

I’m right there with you. A nudge is all I do. If the hat fits but could be just a bit bigger I’ll put a stretcher in in for a couple of days. Mostly, I just use the stretcher to take a standard oval to a long oval without sizing up the hat.

Last one of my refurbished hats. This was one of my early borsalino hats. Lots of taper to the crown and the brim did not want to behave. So I decided to iron it; big mistake. It messed up the ribbon big time (i'm more careful these days). The sweatband was damaged as well (not by me), so that needed attention too. I sent it over to Fleur of Penumbra to have it reblocked and reribboned and to see what could be done with the sweatband.

Part II
During. It's not that easy choosing the right ribbon for a hat. The mor options you have the harder it gets. In the end we chose a wide ribbon because the felt had discoloured above the existing ribbon somewhat, which made a narrow ribbon impossible. In the end I chose ribbon 6 I think.

This is how it turned out. A hat I was unsure of and that had several issues (some of them caused by me) is now ready again for years of wear.

It seems like they will continue on under Camperio because they are betting nobody will buy the factory without the brand name. I am sure Daniele will clarify from an Italian article. I will also check into this.

Dear friends that you care about the Borsalino affair, those published are the latest news reported and transcribed by the largest Italian financial newspaper "Il Sole 24 Ore"
Two useful premises before starting to read:
A) The American legislation regarding bankruptcy and different from the Italian one, as well as the others in force in the western countries.
B) The judge has seized the Borsalino brand because it wants to be joint with the real estate (factory, machinery and showroom) and the workers, otherwise, in the event of a split, brand on one side and the other producer, would be the TRUE end of the Borsalino. Because it is useful to remember that the know-how of the workers, as well as those of Cappellificio Cervo are a heritage for the world's hat making
"A negotiation lasting over two and a half months, carried out in a context of "non-belligerence", with the procedure of bankruptcy de facto suspended, and which now bears its first fruits. For the Borsalino of Spinetta Marengo, nell'Alessandrino, it goes towards an extension of the rental period of the business branch at Haeres Equita of Philippe Camperio. The contract, which should have expired on May 31, will continue for a few months. Communication should take hours, to confirm that the contacts between the bankruptcy trustees and the Italian-Swiss entrepreneur have led to a shared solution, although not yet final.

Yesterday there was a meeting, today is scheduled a second step before closing the story. First of all, the decision guarantees the production continuity of the site - the company produces regularly and the 140 employees are working full time, as the trade unions report, with revenues of 17 million for 2017 and a growing production - and in fact prepares the phase two of the industrial affair of Borsalino, that of the competitive auction to win the entire plant, as required by the same bankruptcy procedure. The auction will also participate in the Haeres Equita Camperio, assisted by lawyers Giuseppe Iannaccone and Alessandro Monza. Just the extension of the lease, together with the proposal for the resolution of the dispute and the commitment to take part in the auction represent the heart of the agreement between the company and the bankruptcy curation, represented by Stefano Ambrosini and Paola Barisone.


Nobody in this affair had any interest in interrupting the company's operations: Philippe Camperio has always said this, the curators and the court reiterated it, the trade unions and the whole Alessandria asked for it. mobilized to keep attention on the story of Borsalino. The stalemate of the beginning of the year, however, did not bode well, but now the story seems to be approaching a positive solution. It isn't exactly clear to me what is on auction. From the previous article I gathered it would be the production facility, inventory and the Corso Roma shop. If the brand itself is not on auction what kind of situation would that bring if another interested party would buy the factory? The factory could not produce borsalino hats, because it doesn't own the brand name and the brand could not produce the borsalino quality hats because it wouldn't own the factory. I know that has not stopped other brands putting goods on the market that have nothing to do with the original quality or know how, but still.
Or am I missing something here? What does it mean that the court seized the brand name?
Would have liked to buy the factory, but my piggy bank came up short

Unfortunately nothing like that is available. You can get a pretty good idea of what is going on from the photos (also paper labels) but that requires some experience. There is a 1950s era catalog from a Roman shop posted here but it's not very detailed and is specific to that time / location. If I locate it I will send you the link. If you go back through this thread you will get an idea of the situation. I am sure others will comment.

I have tried to follow and understand the issues involved in the Borsalino financial downfall but i seem to have gotten lost in how the Italian bankruptcy proceedings have evolved.
This i know..the last paragraph of Daniel’s excellent post where “the bank acquisition for 18 million Euros for the Borsalino brand...a brand put under preventive seizure by the court itself” sounds problematic at best and stinks to high heaven. Maybe i missed something but it has the feel of corruption at some level whereby the acquisition of the Brand name and manufacturing plant/equipment and staff has been made null.
Idk but it sounds suspect at a very high level.
