I have always been a big fan of Banana Republic, both the original jeep-through-the-window stores from the 80s and the "Business Casual" clothing of modern times. People aren't taught a dress code any more, or that certain attire is appropriate for certain places. An example of this is the sea of Lululemon and gym attire you see at the airport. Bunny slippers and pajama bottoms abound. (Remember when people used to dress up for air travel?) I have found that plane and train staff actually treat you better if you are dressed well, because it shows you bothered to make an effort, and they appreciate it.

A decent pair of chinos and a button up Oxford collar shirt go a long way if you are going a long way on a 10 hour flight. I have mentioned this online before and the pajamas-at-the-airport crowd went into attack mode saying, "Traveling is so uncomfortable," and "I'm chasing children around, I don't want to wear shirts with buttons." It seems like a lame excuse not to dress nicer. You can chase a 4 year old just as easily in a shirt with buttons as Lululemon tights and a power-bra from REI. The same people who say they MUST wear gym clothing on a 4 hour flight also work corporate jobs where they have to wear a shirt with buttons and skirt/trousers for 8 hours a day at the office. If you can stand it at Morgan-Stanley and Citibank you can stand it on United and Delta. I'm not saying you have to wear a suit with a stuffy collar, just dress like you are employable and have some self respect.

The Secretary of the US Department of Transportation had this to say about pajamas at the airport, "I would encourage people to dress a little better which encourages us to maybe behave a little better."

I agree! When people are dressed in their pajamas and track bottoms they behave casually like they would at home. People who wear something 'business casual' tend to act a little more professionally, like they would at work. If people are more polite and respectful, it makes the whole airport-travel experience just a little bit better.
