Zaika..i know you know this..but do take care with old appliances. When my kids were babies i had an old 50's fan in their room that caught on fire!!Thankfully, i smelled the smoke, but what a scare!!.Just make sure to not leave your toaster unattended!

oh my gosh! that's very scary. but yeah, i don't use my old appliances too often for that reason. one of these days, though, i'd like to get them rewired or something so they can be used.

still...i'll watch my toaster like a hawk.

and ...I firmly beleive in the 'once the major stuff is cleaned out'....

using the 'burn off' method....much like your gas heater the first time you use it in a season.....run the toaster with nothing in it....and the last of the dust will go away.....

I grew up with those toasters where you had to check the toast regularly or it burnt. There was a hinged door that was turned down to check it.

We lost so many good pieces of bread the way. To this day I can't leave the kitchen without unplugging the damn thing

My little Treasure Chest

I am sure by now those of you who regularly read the Classifieds are wondering what "treasures" came my way by the acquisition of the 1950's estate that I am giving away and how I found the estate. What you don't know is that the people were complete strangers at the beginning of the week that I started helping them.

The son put an ad on Craigslist that he was giving away free antique books, and specified a Hawaii phone number and a time to call. To make this understood, I am in California, reading my local Classifieds. Confusion reigns.

Anyway, I call and he says he is coming to California and has one week to clean out his mother's house, who passed away six months earlier. I end up spending 1.5 hours on the phone with him, telling him how to clean the estate with as little grief and emotional investment as possible. Than I sit down and write all my instructions for him to follow when he gets to town, including a set of detailed instructions and a list of what supplies to purchase.

What happened from there was a natural progression; the family invited me to take away anything that wasn't going to be put out for the estate sale, and than after the estate sale I helped them clear out the larger and left over items to haul to my charity shop. Small items were either put into my car for the Lounge, given to charity or were put in the dumpster. No middle ground.

Since they were selling the house, every single item in the house had to be discarded. And I mean every single item. The mother kept things in excellent condition, so I was a bit surprised at some items I picked up, as they were in much better condition than you would expect. I think some people expect amazing blow out vintage items to hit the Classifieds for free, but there were no swimsuits, no fine lingerie, no swing or vintage dresses pre-1960 and no general clothing pre-1960. The single fur coat, hats and the jewlery I received were donated to charity already, since the charity shop will have a jewelry sale in a few weeks.

The husband's clothing was discarded a number of years ago, but I will eventually get to the men's shoes I salvaged. This was a normal woman living her life, and it appeared she cleaned out her closets of most items pre-1960.

I picked up a few things, and purchased a couple nice appliances, but this was one thing the family put aside for me. I call it my treasure chest, as it was very special. The daughter explained it had sentimental value to the mother, as it contained special things from her life. I hope you enjoy the pictures.

Wow. I love those fabric yo-yos.
Yes, that is a powder puff holder for dusting powder.
Cigarettes, purchased a pack a day or so, but that doesn't mean only one person in the family smoked them.
Gouging us for Kotex and frozen Daiquiris even then, yeesh!
Seriously, how touching that treasure chest is. Thank you for posting it. How fortunate the family was you made that telephone call, and we are for you sharing with us.

Went to the local "traders day" flea market. It's held the first weekend of the month on Friday and Saturday. I picked up 3 military issue 90 degree flashlights, some of the parts were missing, but did come up with two that works and one complete with the colored lenses. Also picked up an explosives can (empty) that is dated 1967. Can anyone give me any information on the can, what type of explosives it may have been used for etc? I think the can will make an interesting cane/umberella stand.
The G.I. Joe next to one of the flashlights belonged to my late Grandmother. It was given to me a few weeks ago, it's dated 1964, and was still in the box.

Thanks for the reply on the case. Not having been in the military, I wasn't sure. I really wanted to join the Air Force right after H.S., but the recruiters who called (all branches lol) would hang up like a flash as soon as I said the word "Diabetic".
