i agree with BK that there seems to be an excess of fabric between the shoulders. and the jacket is a tad long to my eye. (but no-one around here agrees with me about jacket length so you can ignore that). trousers look cool.

there's something wierd about the back of the arms where they meet the jacket body.

I agree with you. The jacket looks too long to me. However, I think that shortening it would make the bottom row of buttons, and the hip pockets, fall too low ... and that would be worse.

I believe it's a post war suit so; it sits just about right on him! He had to lower the pants... so; it was for a shorter man thus making it longer on the original owner. In the post war years, coats were worn longer. You can agree with me or disagree but, that's what I have seen in movies and photos.

Ray, I wouldn't have had the sleeves touched at all. Once some one starts taking things in, it's hard to keep the integrity of a coat. When having a suit altered, I would have only had the back seam taken in some and left the shoulders and sleeves alone. The minimal alterations are ideal I feel. I know most here don't like larger shoulder pads but, making a late 40's suit look like a early 30's "Non drape" suit is going to look worse in my opinion.

Its vintage clothes... they're fun to wear, they look good but, it's kid of silly to obsess over small details.

I probably didn't have the shoulders reduced more than 1/4" of an inch. The jacket is quite un-pressed. It was rolled in the packaging and went straight to the tailor the next day. It's going to the cleaners as soon as this mini-typhoon clears.
There could be a little more taken in in the back and the hip to make it fit a little cleaner, but the lighting there is accentuating how bad it is. Could it have to do wit hthe sleevehead being slightly bigger because it was a 38 suit?
I agree that the jacket is long for my personal tastes because I am very into Astaire's look, but as Root said, it's the post-war look. You see it in a lot of movies. Besides, the balance of the suit was shifted lower to begin with and moving the hem of hte jacket up would upset the balance. The first working button hits at my belly button if not a little bit below it.

Ray, that suit looks great, maybe a little long in the body, though It's a great fabric.

On another note, I think women look better in men's tailored suits than me,n, though that's my perspective. They just have the awsome shapes, and when a tailor takes a mens' jacket and shapes it to a lady... sort of like the WAAC looks int he 40's, it looks spectacular. When the suit is tailored to look like a men's suit on a woman on the other hand, like the looks that were showing up in the 80's... well it just looks awkward.

Ray, i wasn't trying to suggest that you alter the hem. i realise that it wouldn't work because of the low lapel/button stance.

by the way, where DID Lauren and Venessa get those suits ? which lounge member did they mug ?

The coat isn't too long. Ray, we're surrounded by pre-war prudes. I enjoy a longer coat when I find one, it feels ok and don't try and make a post war suit a pre-war suit. Man, if you only took the shoulders in a 1/4 inch, what's the point? That is such a small amount to take in... waist of dough.

Get the suit cleaned and pressed and then, she'll look AMAZING! Also remember that post-war suits aren't to fit too snug, they should have some moving room.

On the cross dressing note... I like my gals in dresses... not looking like me! Call me Archie Bunker if you will but, men's suits on dames looks a little too masculine.

About The Trouser Length

Too short IMO. If you want more length without losing the cuff your tailor can employ a technique called a French or faux cuff.

Root- Originally the tailor wasn't going to touch the shoulders. I told him it looked a little wide but he was like "nah, it's the look", so I was going to leave them as is. Then, when I asked him to narrow the sleeves slightly he was just like "Well if I'm going to be doing then I might as well take in the shoulders a little too." The operation in total cost me about $50.

Tomasso- I hiked the pants up a little higher than I normally would. I'm on the verge of "wire fence"-hood in that picture.

Heres a picture I just took of me with relaxed shoulders. In the previous pictures I'm probably standing soldier straight with my chest puffed out and arms pulled back.

The back sits alot smoother and there isn't so much bunching at the sleevehead.

It's interesting that in most ads for suits in the 1940's, pants never or rarely had a brake in the crease. Ray is totally period with the shorter hem... I like it, it looks good Ray!

Also, Pre-War styles are pretty attractive, they are my favorite but, I don't close the door on post-war fashion. I enjoy suits from 1928-1955! Beautifully tailored clothes, just a different style. Heck alot better then what they're making today!

But seriously, the crotch should be worn rather high, enough so that a gentleman will need to decide on which side he wishes to "dress".

It looks pretty right to me. Your tailor did a good job. If you find any more size 38 suits like that but don't want to go to all of that bother...send 'em along to me...I won't need to change a thing!

I can handle 'em pretty good. I have one of those adaptors so you can put a whole stack of 'em on your turntable so they'll just drop down and play.
