David: I love your wonderful new Portis pair. Portis made some very nice lids employing some very distinctive ribbon work. Unfortunately, it seems that, more than any other maker, nearly every Portis one comes across is of diminutive size.

Randall: You are a natural at wearing the Derby. That Portis looks terrific on you. Please post some detail photos of the hat when you have the opportunity.

AL - thanks - it was odd that I came across two great Portis deals at about the same time. I'm liking them, they are rather cool hats.

Randall - even though I remember everyone in the City wearing bowlers to work when I was a kid, I've never even tried one on for myself. Ill have to correct this oneof these days. Yours is working for you.

Man, David, that is a great hat. The ribbon is muted yet electric-- so cool.
Randall, I continue to agree with those who commented that you appear totally comfortable in that bowler-- you're a born bowler wearer!

Agreed! Good description of that great ribbon. I wonder if a roll like that can be found anywhere. The vintage stuff I've seen is always a solid color.

Thanks for the positive remarks, gents. :)

Thanks Jeff, Randall and Jimmy.

It was just complete luck that I stumbled upon these two hats at about the same time.

Some Portis Hats I would like to sell? My mother worked for Portis in the 1940's when she was sixteen and I'm looking for advice/opinions on what they may bring.

Leave us suppose these are 7 1/4 -a mean size, right in the meaty part of the contemporary curve. (or... you could reveal the size Balabama! ;))

On an eBay auction-

The 1st & last are tyrolean nightmares few people will pay much for.

The back bow porkpie is sweet & hip & PHAT... but again, few will pay much, that one may be an exception, I can see breaking my "no black hats" rule on that one, maybe ...$65 - $100 on a good day, maybe.

The tan wide brim is the most sought after of the lot- again, only speculation... $125- $150 on a good day.

....my .o2 [huh]

I appreciate your meaty adjectives and timely response! The tan wide brim is a 7 3/8 and that admittedly "SWEET" black back bow is a 7 1/8
I may not be able to part with that one.

Snagged this Portis off the bay, I was the only bidder. Stingy 1 7/8" brim. Very light weight and has "Breeze-Lux" written on the sweatband. Color was listed as Charcoal and the pixs looked gray but I'd describe it as a dark Taupe with purplish tones. Fits perfect.

Portis with "Swansback" sweatband Unknown Model

First post to the Portis Path. This is one of my favorite everyday wearer hats. No thrills just a classic looking hat. Not sure of the age but I'm guessing late 30s to early 40s. I'm sure someone more familiar with vintage Portis hats might have some idea. It has a 2 1/4" brim with underwelt edge; approx 5 1/2" open crown with a 1 1/16" grosgrain ribbon. The hat is unlined but you can see where there use to be a sticker on the crown tip. The leather sweatband is unreeded. The sweatband is stamped, "Swansback Water Repellent "Cushion" Band," which I think Portis hat the patent or trademark. Not sure when Portis introduced the Swansback sweatband but I have seen it on other Portis hats.
