Oh, absolutely. Thing is, Schott is made out of a somewhat lighter and usually softer leather and in a combination with an oversized #10 for the main zipper, be it Talon or YKK, it's a guarantee the zipper will last. Aero's CXL is just too thick for those tiny no. 5's and as for the other makers using vintage NOS zippers, the decaying cotton just might be the culprit.

YKK makes a good zipper.
The ykk on my schott cxl hh was a good zipper, in my experience though the sleeve zippers would not stay shut/fully zipped up, they would slowly begin to open so i consistantly had to check them- aggrivating to me

Why these crown zippers are so expensive? The teeth admittedly look nice when done up but $500 it’s hard to stomach. What’s the deal with those?

I could not agree with you more. Personally, I think is just pure marketing from some sellers. Functionally, I do not like the way the tape folds and bends. I believe, talon and others makers make so very functional and durable zips that are much better value than crown.

Leave it to Germans to do it right. All Harro jackets have the entire male end reinforced in a single piece of metal casing. No need for plastic tape, nothing. Slides in much easier, no chance of misalignment and won't ever tear.

The best military zippers I have ever used were Russians. No joke. Their male parts of the zippers are a solid piece that folds around the tape. Then I would say SOME Talons are very good.

Have you ever had a jacket with a no10 Crown zipper?
I also thought people who spent Crown money where crazy, and then i bought a jacket with a no10 Crown zipper and i now swear by them, they are without a doubt the best zippers i have ever handled and i have a lot of different zippers...
Nothing else comes close, at least nothing i have seen yet.

Nothing can beat a personal preference because of the experience and familiarity of a particular item. I understand how you feel about crown zippers. I also agree with your personal choices.
Currently, I have several original Korean War garments with #10 crown spring-loaded zippers. I also have some LW jackets with them as well. Furthermore, I Also have crown zippers of all kinds and periods spring and none spring. Personally, the late 50s crown spring-loaded zippers have better pullers and sliders in all the line of the crown military zips. The older none spring crown zippers have the most trouble free pullers and sliders. The weak link in the zippers is the way the teeth attach to the ribbon. Not the strongest I have seen.

While in flight training, my Russian instructor gave a very nice garment. The zippers in the garment were so much better that is not even funny. The quality of the nickle was far superior to any I have ever seen. But the design was so much better than the newer zippers. This design reminded me of the early 30s hookless. Additionally, the zipper's male and female parts had two big rivets fastening all the fabrics. They were built to last. I still have the garment in my Bulgarian property. If I get a chance, I will photograph it, so people can make their own conclusions regarding its functionality. By the way, there is a military line of talon zippers that are built like a tank and are by far a much better choice for me.

Here is an example of what I am referring too.

There are other zipper options that aren't upcharge that are good. The talon 10 kris b got is one. Or you could send him your own zipper. To me the crown is awsome an worth it, once he runs out they are gone, period. I wonder how many more of these he has. They really are awsome zippers, man are they cool, and high quality.

I totally understand you. I like crowns also. BUT, I have been hearing the "once he runs out they are gone, period". For a very long time. More than 20 years to be precise. The fact is the NOS will one day will run out, but not near anytime soon. LOL.

I was looking for measurements of a lw j23 in size 44 when I came to this tread and remember about zips. Here is an image of some zippers I previously posted in other threads and PM's.

Here are 9 different types of #10 crowns.

Some of my favorites and strongest American made zips. Look at those teeth and tape on those #10 talons.

The most reliable by design is the Conmar.

He just wants his own G-1 type coat. Lucky for me, I have a nice 50s parts jacket that will yield enough materials for his bespoke flight jacket.
