Hi everyone

apologies if it has already been addressed but I haven’t found.

ive got a filson roughout brand new I was considering to sell but I might keep it.

ive read somewhere roughout leather should be conditioned from the inside smooth side (this specific piece is unlined so should be easy) I’ve also read elsewhere it can be conditioned from the roughout side… don’t know what to think of this. Also, how often does it have to be done? In a scenario the jacket would catch occasional rain.
thanks beforehand

Friend, if the jacket is nearly new, do not condition it. It does not need it. You can clean it with a good horsehide shoe brush, and you will be set. If the jacket is new, and for what ever reason it got exposed badly to the outside elements heavy rain, sun, etc. then you might need to condition a bit. Light applications of your favorite liquid conditioner not heavy paste or waxed heavy conditioner. Lastly, the name "roughout" is very misleading because there are many types of leather that go by this name. However, it is understood by majority of the leather industry the term refers to inside out leather. Basically top-full grain leather with the top side not being presented (rather the bottom of the hide) in the boots or garments. Lastly, roughout leather is not suede leather.

hi And thanks for the reply, I’m not going to do anything know, I was just inquiring for further scenarios. This one is actually a thick leather roughout, it’s not split steer, the smooth side of the grain is visible on the inside Side. I’ve also noticed certain brands such as iron heart market their sued as split steer or roughout suede, which doesn’t make sense, I’ve had an iron heart type 3 suede, and it has not much in common with the thick hide of the filson and looked rather like a soft and supple suede
