Being German, and a hunter, I sometimes will wear my hunting hat. It's similar to the one in my display picture but a dark green colour instead. Its use is sacred, so I only really wear it for the hunt (and when the hunt is successful, I place a blood-soaked evergreen twig in on it), holidays, and special occasions.

Would be nice to run into a find like this one. The hat display stands must go back a hundred years along most of the other stuff.

Steve- Yes you are right. Thats very fine Hats stands . A pity that he sold everything combined.

Welcome Ritterbruder to the Lounge and to the German & Austrian Hutmachers thread.
Thats a nice Ritual. Do you want posting Photos of the Hat? I would to see him.

My guess is rabbit/hare felt. I must say I do like the hedgehog look! How does it respond to a counter clockwise brush + steam?

Borchert Berlin W.

Borchert Berlin W., size 59cm, back of sweatband stamped August 6, 1952. Could have been made by Rehfus & Cie. (Kehl a. Rhein) after factory reopened in 1951. Also the Borchert Berlin W. store location changed after WWII because the original location was in the Soviet sector.

Here is info on the BB finishing machines that were installed at Hat Corp of America in the late 1930s.

Here's another correspondence regarding the BB finishing machine and McLachlen hat bodies. Interesting technical info.

This are interesting documents you find. Good teamwork between the us and Germany's hat factories.
It looks as if the American Hatter then not been able Velour,
chamois, etc. produce in quality. The BB must have done a great machine.

The Euros had the edge with specialized finishes. Also such finishing processes could be time consuming and labour intensive. BB supposedly was able to stream line the process for Velour and Chamois finishes.

That Borchert is absolutely stunning!! It looks much nicer in your photos than in the auction photos. I'm glad that you were able to snag that one off the bay. How wide is that brim? It could just be my perception, but this brim seems wider than many of the German/ Austrian hats in this thread.

Josh, Thank you for the tip on the Borchert. It's a really great hat! The brim is just a bit under 2 1/2 inches. I would say that is on the wider side but not unusual for the time period. Germany pretty much fell inline with what happened in the US regarding brim widths. The blocking is what is different. You rarely see the straight edge block like you see in many American hats of that time period.
