Black ponyhide?

Anyone know where I can find pictures of a jacket that has some wear?
When I got the swatch I thought the black pony was too shiny, looking at it again now that own a brown pony jacket I think the black pony looks great.

As compared to full aniline shinki and the pigment dyed (teacore) shinki the pony seems to have more loose grain (depends on the batch of course). Which is great if you're going for a vintage look. I know the look of loose grain may not be for everyone but I love how it looks on my aviator.

Loose grain, similar to the brown pony.

But of course it all depends on the batch, which is probably one of the reasons why Greg discontinued the brown pony. See below.

Pony on the left, Teacore/Pigment on the right.

The black pony is black all the way through, and semi aniline top coat. It isn't as grainy as the teacore/pigment when new, but it has more potential to develop unique grains. Pony also feel softer to the touch. IMO it feels more premium than the teacore version.

If you like grainy shiny stuff that fades, go with pigment/teacore shinki.

If you like smoother softer semi gloss stuff, go with pony shinki.

Got this back in July but haven’t shown it yet. It’s a custom design based on few different jacket designs that are out there. It’s made of the full aniline Shinki and it’s super grainy.

I’m loving this jacket. The fit is both slim and practical. I can actually move around in it and even layer a bunch if I need. This is the thinnest Shinki I’ve experienced and it’s really comfortable to wear.

I know there’s been some backlash from some people about his patterns, particularly the shoulders. I actually don’t mind them. IMO it gives a very discernible look to his jackets. I’m officially a fan.

That's a great looking jacket, reminds me of your caboose. J24 back?

What happened to the chain and ball?

I'm starting to really like that Highway man style trim (cuff, whatever you call it) on the front & bottom of the jacket. Has anyone everyone seen a Cafe Racer with that design? I might ask Greg about adding 1.5-2 inch to my existing Route 66. Wonder if that bottom trim could be a good hack to get that extra length I want, or just an exercise in futility. Anyway, assuming it would look good, now got to figure out if it's possible and how much. Obvious issues like matching the leather, etc.

Great jacket!

That's a wing collar right? How did you order this jacket may I ask? Was it straight zip Manhattan (action back) Caboose front plus wing collar?

I am shooting for a full action back Japanese "highwayman" with wing collar, so while different than yours but in the same ball park, more highwayman front pockets and the added button cuff. Going full melton paneled lining like the Rainbow Country jackets. And Hookless zip. Greg has the Waldes loop and ball zip for chest pocket now?

Thanks, except I can actually wear it comfortably. The Caboose will probably go on classifieds if I ever get around to it.

You undoubtedly saw the back on IG, it’s based on a J-24 back. Here’s a pic.

Unfortunately the ball and chain already broke. I’m not blaming poor quality. I think wearing my cymbal bag to and from band practice broke it which wouldn’t surprise me. The quality of the zips are actually really nice.

Thank you.

This is Greg’s standard spread collar, the same you’ll find on his Idaho model.

As far as ordering, I just sent Greg the following image and my measurements.

The front jacket design is based on an FCL Lindbergh. The back was originally based on an FCL Eric but then it morphed to a Manhattan/J-24 back design.

The ball and chain chest zip says Talon.

Loose grain, similar to the brown pony.

The heavy graining in the arms is part of the reason for wanting the pony, it’s aging looks so similar to one of your vintage half belts.

Just curious if you were going to go Full Aniline on one and Semi Aniline Pony on a 2nd jacket, which would you choose for a Route 66 and Which one for the Idaho?
Pony on the left, Teacore/Pigment on the right.

I’m glad you said this. I was afraid that the softer hand might be considered a bad trait considering that most of the Shinki sold seems to be pigment.

I’m now team aniline, originally planned to go 1 and 1 but after seeing the rare Pigment Shinki jackets with extreme wear. A little doesn’t bother me, I’m not against the aging look especially with vintage with the gray underneath but I’m in no rush for it either.
Definitely not on a $3,000 jacket like this mulholland
