This is the greatest thread ever!! It's actually the thread that made me discover the FL in the first place. I finally scanned these pics of my grandma and her friends and family. She was born in 1901 so she's in her 20's here. I have a whole photo album of them. My mom was adopted so these people are not technically related to me, so I only know her(grandma) in the pics. They're from the 1920's, in NJ & mostly vacation photos (hope the quality is OK)

I came a across a blog this morning that is chockfull of photos by a Chicago resident Vivian Maier, a street photographer from the 1950s - 1970s. Vivian's work was discovered at an auction in Chicago where she lived for 50 years but was originally a native to France. Her discovered work includes between 30-40,000 mostly medium format negatives. Born February 1, 1926 and deceased on Tuesday, April 21, 2009.

Very interesting!

I'm certainly no art critic, so I'll probably bungle this trying to explain. I get a sense of voyerism with some of the pictures. I think it's because you can sort of feel her perspective. What I mean is it's not just a shot of the back of a lovely hat, you can almost feel the photographer standing there, capturing the image without being an actual part of the moment.

I love the one of the lady stading in the pencil skirt with the big brim hat and the heels!

Found this one while poking around the Boston Public Library's website today. The scene is Boston's old Braves Field, probably during the 1948 World Series, and the ladies are members of a rabid group of baseball fans called the "Lolly-Pops," named for their founder, Lolly Hopkins of Providence, R. I. She's the gal at the far right, and was well known as "Megaphone Lolly" for obvious reasons. She would bellow at the umpires in a cultured upper-class accent, and throw candy onto the field for players who especially pleased her. (And nobody who knows New England women would think she was the least bit eccentric.)

Lolly's original megaphone and one of her dresses, on display at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. I've decided she's going to be my new role model, as soon as I can get season tickets to Fenway Park and a fox stole.

Some great aunts

Here are a couple of pics that I just scanned of my mother's aunts, Caroline and Rachel. They were straight out of a Miss Marple story, or possibly Arsenic and Old Lace (hey, you never know about little old ladies).

Plus, here's a charming picture from 1941. It's my mother's family's housekeeper, Theresa. She had a thick German accent, I was told. She used to refer to the Van Wyck Expressway as the Wan Vick..
Anyway, the caption on the back says: "1941, Theresa with gift from her admirer, Jim Parrish, Christmas Cove, Boothbay Harbor, Maine"
