Cookie Gilchrist

Former AFL star running back Cookie Gilchrist passed away from throat cancer today, in Natrona Heights, Pa., near Pittsburgh.
He had a rough time coming up in professional football in the 1950's, never played college ball, never made more than $30,000 a year. He started out in the Canadian Football League. For those who don't know, Canadian football is slightly different from American. It is played on a slightly larger field, with only 3 downs per possession, rather than 4. This makes it a much more wide open game. Anyway, Cookie dominated the CFL for 6 seasons, before being signed by the Buffalo Bills of the upstart American Football League. The Bills played in Buffalo's old stadium, War Memorial Stadium, lovingly known as the Rockpile to western New Yorkers. He lead them to a League Championship in 1964.
After that season the Bills traded Cookie, mainly because of his uncompromising stance on issues like racial equality. He played a couple more years, then retired.
He was a really great football player.

"He never drew attention to himself," Carrigan said. "He was very humble, kind and generous. I'm grateful that my children will continue to enjoy the liberties and freedoms that he fought so hard for."
