Ascots...isn't it time?

Isn't time to bring back the ascot?
Nicer looking than an open shirt.
Not as formal as a tie.
It's time!
What are the rules for wearing them?
Or do you think these days it makes
one look like an ass?
As for me...I'm wearing them.
And I've been right about trends before!

Dunno. My son wears them.

Basically, you can wear them in casual situations instead of a tie, but in today's society, I let my son get away with them to church (because sometime it's just easier). As to looking like an ass, I think some of it has to do with your attitude over the clothes you wear.

What's the word on hankeys worn neckerchief style, inside the collar, with the big puffy part towards the front?

I've got some sharp silk paisley hankeys that would work great. I just don't want to look like Vincente Minnelli or the Upper Class Twit of the Year.

Ascots are mighty fine. They can make the wearer's neck seem longer (to me anyway) and frame the head very nicely.

All men whould wear ascots, the world deserves it!

I love the look. Can't get much more masculine than an assassin:

There was a time in the 30s when every man who was worth anything in Hollywood was being photographed wearing cravats.

:eek:fftopic: Love this shot. "The Jackal", wasn't it?
Love wearing ascots too, by the way!
Gives style to the blue jeans, white shirt look. And dresses down the formal black/white suite look.

Very happy to see others who appreciate the ascot. I brought mine out again over the past couple years. In an effort to be more casual in our business casual workplace I will leave my bow tie at home and wear an ascot in my open collar on days when we are not seeing clients. The suits get time off as well - the blazers, Harris tweed jackets and wool trousers are coming out more often. This is about as close as I can get to casual these days.

Here is one of my ascot photos, on the roof deck in the summer:

Looking pretty good there, Hemingway. How often do you wear ascots and how has the general "reception" been when you wear them?

Vonwotan,

How has the reception been when you wear ascots in an office on more casual days - I've thought about taking that plunge, but I haven't gotten the courage up yet.

Response on Ascot

The only strange/negative response I have ever had, was:
Are you havin' a cold? lol
But that was only once. besides that I get many compliments like:
"Nice, stylish, Hollywood, very british...." So jump into it!!!!

Generally, few comment - I find myself asking whether some or our employees even notice these things. Those comments I do receive have been positive though sometime qualified with a statement about not being able to pull it off, or not comfortable taking the leap.

I do receive a bit of good natured teasing from long time colleagues, as I always have for my bow ties, hats or any other "uncommon" piece of clothing.

P.S. I am tempted show up in vintage Edwardian coat and tails and cravat (purchased for an Edwardian dinner and other period events). That might wake them up!

Thanks Lionheart and Spitfire, your kind comments are appreciated. I wear them a lot and I don't think I have ever heard a single comment.
