Cravates

Need help. Just bought a 30s yellow cravate for husband's birthday. He's semi into vintage but doesn't wear it, but has often expressed interest in cravates. How do you tie them, fold them, or whatever it is they do. It would be good to be able to show him rather than that blank look he gets! :)

emmy ascot

did anyone notice Jeremy Piven's ascot at the Emmys?

I thought he looked pretty good & his speech was quite touching.

As I look around the internet, I see most have regarded his ascot as eccentric. Wikipedia referred to it as 'unusual'.

I think I have that very ascot!

Personally, I love ascots, but I don't think that a black-tie event is the best place to showcase one. Though, I imagine there were all sorts of other ridiculous get-ups there; I would imagine that an ascot was the least digression from the norm. This is troubling.

I have the same pattern too, both in navy and red. As things start cooling down here in Texas, I'm planning to use them on a regular basis when dressing for my work.

I agree, though, a traditional black tie event like an awards presentation is not the time. He has to go to enough less formal industry functions where he could try it.

And yes, I too find it troubling that the trades are making fun of it. Wasn't someone wearing a stork outfit or similar abomination that night? Was he the only "fashion flop" story they had?

Cheers!

It has Hugh M. Hefner and Thurston Howell III written all over it.

Still better than most of the slobs who showed up. George Clooney's about the only guy I've seen at the Emmys lately who appears to be appropriately dressed for the occasion.

I've noticed in the last few years , that fewer men opt for the bowtie w/ tux.
And some hipsters opt for some sort of tie-less banded collar. Effectively looking like a sci-fi priest.

I think Piven looks great w/ the ascot, I'm sorry to see that in the tabloids, it hasnt been well regarded.

I must say, when I wear an ascot, it gets more notice than a fedora. When I wear an ascot AND a fedora; well, that is really something!

To add to my former comments, I think Piven looks good, but if I were him, I would have kept it in my pocket (or had my assistant hold it). After the ceremony, I would have taken off the bowtie and relpaced it with the ascot.

I would consider it a compliment to be made fun of by a magazine of the caliber of Entertainment Weekly.

Actually , most of the reviews that I've read derided him. Some compared him to "Fred" on "ScoobyDoo".
AssociatePress's Fashion writer noted:

Jeremy Piven stood out from the crowd in an ascot but it was hardly an outstanding look.

I don't care for the "ascot with tux" look, but I have to say that after seeing Hemingway wearing an ascot in another thread (the one about the Victoria Falls jacket?) I've become a big fan (of ascots, that is, although I'm a fan of Hemingway, too). Does anyone know of a good source online?

:cheers1: Here, have one on the house. :cheers1: ;)
I don't know about on-line, but I bought mine in the Ralph Lauren outlet for $20.00 or so, maybe less. His are high quality and have vintage patterns. :)
