On a side note, I read a fascinating article recently about the surge in the deer population in this country in the last twenty years or so. It seems that after WWII and the development of suburbs (and the consequent deforesting of vast areas) the deer population declined rapidly, but with the...
Same here. The only felt hat that I'm a little careful with is my Akubra SBCD because I don't want to get any smudges on the light-colored felt. Just common sense. One of the images that has remained in my head from when I was a kid is that of my dad's Uncle Jim coming in our front door...
Casanova's "History of my Life," Volumes 1 and 2. I've just ordered 3 through 6 (there are 11), and I'm wishing I'd done it earlier. This is one of those books that makes you wonder how you could've missed it all these years. When I left him he had already taken me with him through many of 18th...
Some time ago Dinerman wrote about how, in the 1920's and up to the '60's, there were hundreds of small makers of deerskin jackets all over the U.S., but particularly in the Midwest. They were often Mom-and-Pop operations and produced some lovely jackets.
I'm not a fan of the fedora with a t-shirt look, but then again I rarely go out of the house these days wearing a t-shirt. I suppose a straw would be okay, but then you're getting into the Jimmy Buffett-Parrothead-exec-on-drunken-holiday look, which I see too much of in these parts. If you look...
I have several pairs of Fryes, and they're all very well made. I've seen the Artisinals on Ebay going for heavily discounted prices, but what worries me about those vendors is that some have a no-return policy and, especially with engineers, the sizing is often a problem. Also, I received a pair...
I hope you can get the arms shortened at a reasonable price, as that's a beautiful jacket and looks great on you. Excuse my ignorance, but couldn't you just tighten the straps at the wrist when you put it on?
That really is a cool jacket. The half-belt design is particularly nice. Terry comes up with some fantastic jackets and is a straight guy to deal with. I was pleasantly surprised a few months back when I bought a jacket from him and it arrived in two days.
I've used the chest pocket on my LHB for everything from credit cards to train tickets or subway tokens. Very handy when travelling. One question, though: is that Himel's regular label? I've never seen that one before and thought for a moment I was seeing the label of a certain Scottish company.
I'd always thought the same thing about the Fed IV, but when I received my first one last year I was surprised to find it felt just about right. I think this was due to owning two CD's before it. For a cordovan jacket you could try the Moonstone color, which I think woud look great with it.
Funny you should ask. I attended my nephew's wedding last year in N.J. and brought my Aero brown Long Half-belt and two hats, an Akubra Campdraft and a gray tweed 8-piece cap. Every time I wore the Akubra with the jacket I got the usual Indiana Jones comments, but when I wore the cap I got...
