I chatted with Dave afew days ago via e-mail; apparently he was the one who outbid me on eBay on a very, very rare Switlik Parachute Co. M-422 (they were one of only 3 companies that received a contract for the first model M-422, along with Monarch and Willis & Geiger).
He’s replicated the...
That appears to be a 1970 manufactured G-1 that was sold in the base PX at some USMC facility. I believe that some makers of MILSPEC G-1 jackets had leftover stock that they relabeled and sold to civilians.
The G-1 is classified as an “intermediate” flying jacket. Back in the day (WWII), the Navy had a cotton summer flight jacket, the M-421, an intermediate jacket, the leather M-422a (later called the G-1) and a winter flight jacket, the sheepskin M-444/M-445.
Now the Navy has Nomex and Aramid...
My LW A-2, 3.5oz hide. Worn almost daily for a 3-year stretch (before my switch to G-1’s). Knits and zipper still good as new. Hide is indestructible! Just wear it and forget it.
Willis & Geiger G-1 today on a cold, rainy, windy day (spent the day indoors watching “Midway” a third time!).
Great fit on this particular jacket; wore it with a thermal undershirt and my old CPO khaki uniform shirt from my Navy days.
Just picked up this 1980’s Willis & Geiger G-1 off the ‘Bay; it’s in pristine condition and the russet goatskin has some of the most amazing grain I’ve ever seen!
The challenge I’ve set for myself is to wear this one often enough (in the sun, rain, etc) to have the dark brown mouton fur...
G-1 today. Saw “Midway” a second time today. Couldn’t resist the cardboard Dauntless mock-up in the theater lobby (had to push afew 5-year old kids out of the way, but it was worth it for the photo op!);)
I had a LW A-2 for about 8 years, wore it every day, everywhere. It was awesome! Perfectly broken-in. I’ll try to find some pics. Sadly I eventually outgrew it and purchased another LW one size larger. Now I’m working on trying to break that one in (but I’m mostly wearing G-1’s these days).
The well broken-in goat skin on this Excelled G-1 is truly superb! As good as anything I’ve seen on the 1950’s and 60’s G-1’s from the “Golden Age” of goatskin Navy flight jackets.
After seeing the new “Midway” movie (I give it a thumb’s up!), I had to wear my “go-to” G-1 jacket: a 2002 military-issued Excelled in a 48 Long. I’ve added a vintage USN whistle to the collar that I obtained from a veteran submarine officer who deployed aboard USS SWORDFISH (SSN 579) during the...
