I'm the same as you with cheap jeans. Heavy denim does last longer, and heavy, pricey denim seems to last for ever (Sugar Canes, in my experience, are more or less indestructible, and they aren't even particularly heavy). Trouble is, you have to deal with the "you paid how much?" thing...
As the Four Horsemen of the Recession have forced me to watch the latest developments in the leather jacket world from the sidelines - :rage: - it seems to me that the new hides that are being offered are at least as interesting as the new (old) jacket designs. The colours and finish are the...
I've seen those coats. The hide (which is terrific) is identical to a couple of 40s/50s Swedish 'akta gettskin' I own. Perhaps they just have massive goats in Sweden...?
I like the Eastman, because I'm from Devon...:o But I do think it looks more interesting. Despite the Rainbow Country having a more complicated pattern I think the Eastman has a shade more 'it.'
Thank you for some real resource material, JC. Invaluable.
Incidentally, I wonder whether the sudden decline of tanneries had something to do with the end of horses as the primary source of power for transport and farming? Not in terms of horsehide but as a huge market (tack/saddlery) that...
The collar is sitting way too high and the proportions are out of whack on you. I've always found trucker-style jackets to be incredibly unforgiving with the wrong body shape (ie mine) - looks like a very nice bit of leather, though, so it might be worth persevering with it.
Came across an interesting jacket in a local vintage shop yesterday. I haven't bought it yet so no pics - sorry!
It seems like a standard, war-era M-1941 in cut, cloth and buttons, size approx 44, but it's lined with grey blanket cloth with a faint dark stripe in places, and the sleeves are...
I totally agree with Capes. Nationalism is toxic. Common interest is far more important - witness our fascinatingly bizarre community here on FL...
By the way, I'm Welsh, Scottish, Cornish, Devonian and a bit of Sassenach on one side, Macedonian Greek on t'other. I have recent family history...
The M-422A is quite a complicated jacket and IMO depends on the relatively loose drape of goatskin to work properly. FQHH plus knits seems like a recipe for disaster.
Lovely stuff, especially the Californian. And I suppose, things being the way they are, that the prices aren't particularly out of line with ELMC's competition (which I'm not for a moment suggesting is a good thing, but it is what it is...).
A much bigger upset, though: I was waiting for...
My biggest fear was that I'd be reeling home at some ungodly hour and knock over their bikes, Pee Wee Herman stylee...
Back to Eastman: I think you're right. That style is a music-based thing for me as well, and perhaps part of the general post-war British hankering for an imagined America.
