    The loss of occasion

I have two people on board for this: my best guy friend (who is the guest of honor--it's his birthday) and my best friend. I know they'll both show up. I'll invite a couple of other dancers and have dessert in the freezer in case they don't show up. I've leared to have a Plan B when I invite...

    Great songs remade

Back in the late 30s or early 40s, there was a songwriter (ASCAP) strike, so some of the big bands swung classical music. Glenn Miller did "Song of the Volga Boatmen," "Moonlight Sonata," and there were several others. Turning that inside out, Rod Stewart has done some four albums of...

How do you coordinate your socks?

I think socks are best matched with pants. It makes them blend with the pants, thus elongating the look of the leg. I would not wear white socks with the first outfit, though. It might be a little too sporty to go with the rest of the outfit.

Officials viewed with distaste items celebrating the Royal wedding

I just bought a CD of early R&B that's fun but not in the best of taste. The flag/handkerchief does look really kitschy. But I think that the royal family making that pronouncement at the time would have been in even poorer taste.

    Secret Weapons

I have ugly feet: wide, oddly shaped, bony and the veins all stand out. So even my sandals cover them up fairly well. However, I do buff off the callouses and paint the nails...pink or white. I see a lot of red toenails and I want to be a little different.

Dancing: Breaking out of Beginner Mode

That reminds me of ballet. Even beginner mode ballet is hard for me (but I'm kind of an old ballerina. :) )

My Search for a Mate is Confined to my Sock Drawer

Was there an event or epiphany that made you stop looking for a mate? Mine was when somebody that a web site hooked me up with had in his profile that he believed in God, yada yada, and then he asked me some, err, very personal questions. My cousin's moment was when she ended up on...

Dancing: Breaking out of Beginner Mode

Welcome to the FL, dnjan. I've found that I cannot practice dancing in bland workout clothes. I have to put on something attractive, or I just don't move well. [huh]

    Learning to Dance

More on Music Just picked up some great CDs last weekend at a used CD store. Instead of giving you titles, I'll make some more general suggestions to find some good practice music. Pay attention to the date the songs were recorded. Most of the swinging music was recorded in the 30s and 40s...

    R&B

I picked up Risque Rhythm - Nasty R&B on Saturday and played it for my mom. Much to my surprise, she said at one point, "That's one of my favorite songs."

Dancing: Breaking out of Beginner Mode

Yes, nobody is going to say, "Jake is such a great dancer--he seems so tense." Keep in mind that you'll look better in swing dance if you're a little goofy (but not flailing around, of course). For a long time, I was very careful and controlled, but when I let myself start having more fun, my...

You can tell a lot by a man's shoes!

Yes, agreed. But I can see your point. Given that I work at a downtown CPA firm, someone wearing a suit and decent shoes, or even nice slacks and a blouse, would probably fit in better here than someone wearing jeans and Birkenstocks, all else being equal. I don't think The Man would let us...

You can tell a lot by a man's shoes!

Given how hard it is to find a good word processor (which we'll be looking for shortly), I wouldn't care if the best candidate were wearing Birkenstocks.

You can tell a lot by a man's shoes!

When I was in basic training, I was constantly busted for having unshined boots. It wasn't for lack of effort, they just wouldn't hold a shine. Even various friends, including a guy who went to a military high school, tried their hand at it. They were the worst boots they'd ever seen...

You can tell a lot by a man's shoes!

I think if I hadn't been in the military, I wouldn't care at all about shoes. I have wide, oddly shaped feet, and if I'm wearing shoes that fit and feel reasonably comfortable, I'm pretty happy. But old habits die hard, so I keep my dress shoes clean and shined. My sandals, I just brush the dirt...

    Your local stations

In Denver, there's KUVO (89.3 FM), which plays jazz. On Saturday at 7 p.m., they have a program called R&B Jukebox, where they play early R&B. (I got my mother to listen to that instead of watching reruns of Lawrence Welk. It was a musical intervention.) There's another station called KGNU at...

    Siriusly Monotonous

I had Sirius on a road trip a few years ago. It was nice to have. My father and I both liked the 50s station and we could get weather reports that coincided with the highway and part of the state, not the county. However, Sirius replaced my receiver, under warranty, with a piece of junk that...

    How "giving" is this group

I make a one-year plan for charitable donations to be given to an organization I'm familiar with. I don't give more when there's a crisis, but I don't give less when there isn't one.

    Siriusly Monotonous

I cancelled my subscription to Sirius last night after I found a couple of good local stations. The selection on the dial seems to have improved over the last few years. Last night I listened to a few hours of Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Count Basie, et al. They even played some stuff from the...
