Our TI, who was about 5'-0" and 105 lbs., told us she was thrown down the stairs during basic training. I've heard far worse horror stories as well. I guess I'm not sure what you're supposed to learn from being kicked around.
I think it can depend on the reason for your tension, and on the individual. Sometimes a stressful situation needs to be resolved, sometimes you just need more sleep. Sometimes there is something nagging you that needs to get done, but you don't want to do it.

I know what you mean. I have to work hard, and I have a tightly wound personality. A few things I've found helpful, though:
Hard physical exercise (but not right before bedtime). This has been shown to help with depression as well as relaxation.
Turn down the lights and play some soft music...
They were still shaving guys' heads in the mid-80s when I was in. Women could have longer hair but it had to be above the collar and out of the eyes and not need any fiddling with during the day.

A big jaw clip (the kind used for hair)? It might be better for bunching than weighting. I think if you used it for weighting, it would just keep swinging into your knees. But if you used it for bunching, it might really hold the fabric in place and leave your hands free.
