I've owned a couple of Shields (of Toronto) over years...one in black which I sold. And I still have one in Blue. Same design- with the Lightening zips, shoulder pads and buckles. Serviceable cowhide leather and decent quality for the time. They are definitely a very distinctive take on the...
I'm in San Francisco, and I own a few Aeros- a Half-belt Dust Bowl, a Sheene, and now a Type 3. If you want to meet up, PM me and we'll set something up. Cheers!
Nice score! Those vintage Kehoe jackets with the zips on the tops of the sleeves are real sleepers-- the steerhide used on the jackets takes on a very supple and beautiful look after years of abuse. I've seen a few slanted pocket Kehoes over the years, and I believe they are the earlier ones...
Jeezus! That's a beautiful looking jacket! I've become a big fan of padded jackets lately, and that one is a beaut! What a score.
And after all this wash talk, I'll have to consider throwing my vintage padded Bates in the washing machine. The Bates has a smoky smell...more like campfire smoke...
Over the years, I've ordered 3 Aero Sheenes. And I believe I finally nailed it with the third one. So drawing humbly from my Sheene experience, here are my observations:
1. Like others, I'm a tad bit surprised that you're considering a size 40 in a Sheene. I'm at 165/6' and my size 40 Sheene is...
Definitely some serious swagger with the diamond padding and top zippered sleeves. Considering how many cafe racers are out there, the padded ones really stand out...I just don't see that many of them, either out in the wild or on this forum. And this one looks like it might have been built...
Yep, I was on the fence at first, but these old school racing Bates jackets rarely come up and then disappear quickly, so I pulled the trigger. Thankfully it fits... and it's definitely got some serious vintage mojo!
But I really think this one would have been way too tight on you, Ton.
I just got this vintage padded cafe racer in this morning (by Bates.) I know...I know... the sleeves are too short. But I don't care... the jacket just oozes attitude. (Sorry about the selfie pic...)
Thanks for the info! I was riding around with them (Red Wing 2268 PT83 Engineer Boots) on my Moto-guzzi today- they are definitely heavy, but I really liked the feeling of added protection. Definitely going to keep them!
I’m rather enthralled with the idea that I could be among the “cognoscenti who want a high-end, cultural artifact with up market hipster overtones." But then again, I bought my Himel Kensington off of ebay, so I suppose that instantly disqualifies me. ;)
Yep. I sold you that one. Shucks- I should have just posted it on TFL, but I typically don’t see a lot of interest in vintage Langlitz jackets here. Honestly, I also wasn’t sure if it was goat or cowhide. The hide was thicker than goat and it didn’t have the pebbly look of my goatskin Cascade...
Dipping my toes in the whole engineer boot thing (pun intended) and I just took delivery of these this morning. I was actually looking for a pair of Chippewas without steel toes, when I stumbled upon these RWs on ebay. I made what I thought was a ridiculously low offer and to my surprise they...
