Most of them seem to be over-priced fashion statements. Except for the Schott. Too bad they didn't include an Aero or a Vanson.
Personally, I've always thought that once an item makes it into GQ, its fashion shelf-life has definitely expired.
I'm hoping they'll leave cafe racer jackets off the...
Good job...and very brave! So did you buy the blonde trucker, and then decided you didn't like the color? Or did you intend to dye it from the start?
I've always wondered about the Schott blonde truckers...if the color will change over the years like a natural finish, or if that is the...
I've worn my Vicenza in all sorts of rain and fog here and never had a problem with staining, spotting, shrinkage, or anything. Just seems to look better with age. And it was wearable right out of the box.
BTW- If I recall correctly, I was told that the Vicenza is the same weight as the CXL FQHH.
Ahhhh...jeez. Just when I thought I was finally done buying custom horsehide jackets, Aero comes along and posts this Type 3 in BLACKENED BROWN VICENZA on their instagram site. Dang it! It never ends!!! Whoever bought this one...please decide it's the wrong fit so they can sell it to me!! ;-)
Not sure if anyone posted these- but here are some other "drool-worthy" pics of the Natural Chromexcel Horsehide Cafe Racer from Aero instagram page...(sorry about the arrows- these are a screen grab.)
I've always thought Buco Cafe Racers were a tad over-rated, especially considering how much they go for these days. But after seeing the fit pics of you wearing that one, I have to change my mind. It looks absolutely amazing- like it was custom made for you. Good score and good post!
The fit on the chest and shoulders looks good...nice and snug like a cafe racer is meant to be. But perhaps the sleeves could be a little longer. Taubers were such well made jackets, and occupy such a unique and rare niche in the pantheon of vintage cafe racers... so lots can be forgiven when...
Good suggestion. Ebay is where I found my vintage Model F. If you have the patience, they occasionally turn up and they're usually not that expensive. (I think I paid around $125 for mine.) Personally, it's not the kind of jacket I would throw big money at just to get it brand new...and they...
Of all the Vansons that I've burned through, the Model F is the only one I kept. The Comet looks great as a design, but in reality the several I've owned were all way too short and too wide for my particular body type. (Love the simplicity of the Mercury, but it's essentially a Comet with a...
There was one available a while back at a shop near here. It was a Cal Leather Cafe racer with the rarer tube padding on shoulders and elbows. Probably horsehide. A bit beat up, but still plenty of life. If you (or anyone else) are interested, PM me, and I'll check to see if it's still...
There were quite a few other vintage leather jacket makers in San Francisco that are worth mentioning as well: Golden Bear, Febes, North Beach, Leather Forever, Johnson Leathers, StrongBilt, Levis, Line-up, and of course...East-West.
Another little tidbit on Taubers from Tenaka's fascinating Motorcycle Jackets book: "Taubers of California was established in downtown San Francisco in 1940. They made good horsehide jackets for local riders and racers as late as the 1960s. Taubers disappeared in the 1980s due to the misfortune...
Wonderful pics and great write-up on Taubers! Love the dice chain pull, and the slant pocket. Very cool!
I've had a soft spot for Taubers ever since I spotted a Taubers pull-over horsehide shirt hanging on the wall of one of my favorite stops. The horsehide they used back then was simply...
You might consider getting it with just the two chest pockets, and no hand warmers. It's a very classic and trim cafe racer look.
That Vicenza Sheene looks amazing!
Of all leather jacket styles, the Type 3/Lee/Jean is probably the best one to go with a shorter fit. Absolutely. And much better to go a tad short, than a tad too long. I'd definitely keep it.
