Time to let this one go to a good home. Thought I’d run it here on FDL, before throwing it up on ebay. Not sure of the brand, best guess is Wards, but definitely a beaut from the past. Based on measurements, I'm going to say a size 42. But please go by the measurement below. Possibly horsehide...
I own an unlined padded Bates motorcycle/flat track jacket. It hasn't got much wear yet, since I'm restoring it, but it's very light, and I'm definitely aiming to wear it during warmer temps when riding. Without a lining, it really is a very purpose oriented jacket- just leather and padding...
Wearing a vintage Bates cafe racer...outside my favorite cafe. This Bates has the elbow & shoulder pads, and blue white racing stripes/ varsity stripes.
Ton is right...the lower flap is where the jacket zipped into the flat track pants. These flat track jackets are very short, and I can only assume the pants had a somewhat high waist. Unfortunately, there were no pants when I bought the jacket. Lord knows what happened to the pants after all...
Since we're on a Bates thread... Here's a flattrack Bates racer I picked up recently "Garry" ...with two Rs. I'll post more pics when it's fully restored.
I have a couple of black Cal Leather Cafe Racers in Horsehide with 2 chest pockets that I could de-acquisition from the collection ;-). And if you're close to San Francisco, we could meet up so you could check them out and try them on. PM me if you're interested, and I'll send you some pics.
Cheers!
Agreed! The diagonal chest pocket is a favorite on these half-belts...conveys somewhat of a rakish devil-may-care look.
The back length is approximately 27", measured from the base of the collar. Shoulder to shoulder approx. 19" (straight across), shoulder seam to end of sleeve cuff approx 24"...
Thanks for the info and the pic. I've been looking at other Windwards, and I'm thinking that's probably the closest...although nothing I've seen yet is an exact match. And it's looking like more and more like horsehide.
There are some very subtle hints of brown that are starting to wear thru the surface along the seams, particularly in a couple places of constant contact. I personally think the blackened brown will look amazing once it gets a few more years on it...but good things take time.
I just checked- not enough mileage on either of my blackened brown jackets yet to see any significant changes. It will probably take another half year until there's something I can photograph.
Thanks Ton- The lining isn't quilted, and sort of a brownish color. But I'm not even sure if this is the original lining. Some homemade patches were done in red. Kind of charming...but may be of little help in identifying it.
I was cleaning out my closet, and I found a black hat by Borsalino that I'd forgotten I even owned. I probably bought this years ago at some thrift, tossed it on a shelf where it collected dust until I came across it today. Maybe a size 7 1/4, but honestly, I'm not a hat person, and don't really...
Just found this in my local thriftstore...kind of a half-belt design. I'm good at identifying cafe racers, but this style is out of my area of familiarity. Does anyone recognize the maker? The leather is amazing, supple and beautiful. No holes or tears in the leather. Might be horsehide...but...
