Mosquitos the size of bats are out in force today . Took my most recent Stetson conversion out for a walk today and I loved having the wide brim as it kept me warm and bug free most of the day. Cheers

Hello everyone it’s been a while. Here’s a recent conversion I did for a fellow lounger. This is a beautiful Knox Superfine Homburg in navy that he was wanting to wear as a flat brim fedora and he asked me to convert it for him.
Fortunately I was able to re use the original binding since I...
Thanks Winston after a few years I can say I finally know how I like my hat to sit on my head and this is the first one I’ve re imagined and had that realization with while making it and blocking it. The felt I might add was like working with clay and it was really accommodating that way. I’ve...
Stetson #1 circa 1960s . Been searching for a back up wide brim in this silver belly for a long time and stumbled upon this in one of my somnambulist moments. Although it was a 7 3/8 and with 1/8 cord ribbon I needed it to be 7 1/2 in case I liked how it turned out. The brim is a whopping 3 3/4...
T.Jones . Glad to see you stick with the conversions I’ve seen the improvement in your work over time. If you need any vintage ribbon let me know as I have a few rolls to clear out.

Yes my work. It’s the only hat I ever really wear anymore and there’s no back up hat either so I tend to baby this one.
Thanks for the comments and likes everyone.

Yes to the above comments. I recently learned about the hat/sunglasses issue when I had my last eye exam or should say most recent ,and took inspiration from looking at vintage movies and the like . It seemed that wire frames are least conspicuous and less interfering with the overall impression...
Haven’t put this vintage Stetson on in 4 months or so. today in 70s bright sun I am tempted to wear it gardening but don’t want to take a chance getting it soiled.
Damn do I miss wearing this hat!

Knox 20 Homburg conversion/restoration for fellow lounger . Brim was cracked open and repaired in the past on back side of brim curl about 6”. Brim as is was only 2 1/2 to begin with and after trimming away damaged area ended up with 2 1/8.
Left the brim w a slight curl so it can be worn w brim...
Yes, I use silk for mine that I put in straws and on felt hats for restoration work where pinch maybe thinning or cracking in some cases. I see that leather one also serves same purpose.

Recently picked this up on Ebay. Planters type vintage Stetson Has a 3 1/2 brim with a kettle curl. Not sure of the age of it but it fits perfectly as a true 7 1/2. Good sun protection. I switched out the original crown ribbon (brown)for a standard black 1 1/8 and added a pinch protector in...
Yes to linen especially the cotton linen blends as they don’t wrinkle as badly. Italian linen with a fine weave count is really supreme. Zegna makes some nice ones. Chinese stuff is coarse and opposite in quality to the Italian linen IMO.

Recent salvage hat. I think it was a Dobbs quality hburg. Felt is badly faded on top of brim but the felt is still pretty good overall . I wanted to keep the patinaed binding intact so was careful while gassing the dirt out of this one.
added a silk liner and sweat in antique.
I discovered this...
Thanks for the comments all. Yeah believe me I had the thought of maybe offering to buy it back but then let go of that idea. I have restored many different brands of hats over the years so for that reason alone it was unusual to restore this hat because it felt so different from vintage quality...
