The Thread to Display Your 1930s Suits

Hyena, that's a great suit but i think the jacket is too small for you. even if you let out the buttons and let down the sleeves it will still be too short in the body. just my take - if you're happy with how it fits that's the main thing. :) from the photo the fabric looks like gabardine (it...

    Birth of the Beltback: 1910s

i've never seen evidence of it happening myself, but i'd be amazed it if didn't have some sort of UK equivalent, however niche.

    Birth of the Beltback: 1910s

that one above is a bit of an extreme example (almost jazz suit territory); the skirt is longer than the ones Dinerman posted, but the waist is still about the same.

also, the 'waist' on those jackets is much higher than normal. in fact, it's so high that it's no longer on the 'natural waist' of the wearer.

    Birth of the Beltback: 1910s

avoid, with extreme prejudice. btw, what's the correct tailoring terminology for the DB 'overlap' ?

Barmey, i've been eyeing those DB styles too. my only concern is the possible 60s connotations that might arise when it's coupled with narrow 20s trousers. not that it should matter what others think; but what if i look in the mirror and also see 60s ? :eeek:

    The Vintage Tailoring Thread

looking forward to see it ! i feel i should point out (and i hope you don't mind me doing so) to other readers that Barmey is apprenticing 3 (?) days a week on Savile Row and is only 19. i predict great things for this young man. i'm sure i'll be asking him for advice in a few more years.

    Pre-1930s neckties

this one is very small. only 1 3/4" wide and 46" long. probably mid teens:

more crochets: the only label: the blue band below had a print which has faded out. looks like 'Royal' something:

    Pre-1930s neckties

almost certainly early - mid 20s: (are knit / crochet ties welcome in this thread ?)

    Pre-1930s neckties

Qirrel, i know what you're thinking; ties are already on the bias so an extra seam or two wouldn't make any difference.

good work Nick. do the trousers have pleats and front darts ?

    1920s suits

Leyendecker's young men often have that insouciance that modern fashion imagery has, which makes them look less dated and more contemporary than (for example) a lot of the over-the-top-smiley illustrations in 40s catalogues. he was a master stylist in my opinion, as well as a brilliant...

in that case, since construction AND labels aren't always reliable, we should be focussing on the designs and weaves instead for dating.
