NYTIMES: White House Unbuttons Formal Dress Code

The president doesn't live and work in a bubble but among and in view of dignitaries, heads of state, religious and political leaders, and friends and enemies of the U.S. Nearly all of them wear serious clothing in public. I'd rather not have the president be the odd man out in a jeans and a...

Does your Dancing have Enough Soul?

Directions to Shake and Shimmy Town If you've been frustrated with the results you've gotten from your dancing, you might be making too much of your lack of immediate success. Those dancers on TV have trained for years at their dancing. The celebrities on Dancing with the Stars who dance...

Ideological and Historical Roots of anti-Suit Hatred

I guess it's a good thing that dueling has gone out of style, too.

Ideological and Historical Roots of anti-Suit Hatred

I get fewer come-ons when I'm dressed up. More looks, but fewer come-ons. The "girlfriends" sound like jealous manipulators who don't want to either make more effort to look good or look unkempt next to their "friends."

Ideological and Historical Roots of anti-Suit Hatred

I'm not sure why suits are considered uncomfortable--perhaps poor construction or lack of tailoring? I'm perfectly comfortable sitting here in a non-stretch skirt, blazer, panty hose and dress shoes. Surely they're more comfortable than low-rise jeans, a camisole and flip flops that have to be...

    Dirt is good!

I haven't been sick since I got my dog a year and a half ago. She used to be stray, and she hangs around me like a shadow. Maybe she gave me worms!

    McMansion Law/Scotrace.

I wish my city had such an ordinance. Years ago, my neighbors across the street tripled the size of their house, planning to take in foster children. They got a divorce instead. The house has had a string of renters ever since. A few blocks away in Denver, somebody scraped a house and put up a...

What did families of the fourties have on their walls?

This is where I bought a nice print of Benson's "Summer." Their prices seem pretty reasonable. http://www.globalgallery.com/index.php

What did families of the fourties have on their walls?

A lot of families had wallpaper on their walls. My great-grandfather was a professional wallpaper hanger and my grandmother was proficient at it. In fact, it was said that the only thing holding up their house was wallpaper. My other grandparents put up a lot of family portraits, but only in...

HORRIBLE movies by Golden Era star

Let's not forget commercials Didn't Rosemary Clooney end up plugging paper towels? And didn't "full-figured gal" Jane Russell hawk bras? I know I've seen Lauren Bacall advertising Tuesday Morning (a houseware store). My guess: they needed the money.

Does your Dancing have Enough Soul?

True--a performance doesn't have to acrobatic to be great. She only does two jumps in this routine. Sadly, a lot of newbie dancers would rather do badly executed aerials than learn some basics well. And for a lot of spectators, it's all about watching people being thrown in the air.

Does your Dancing have Enough Soul?

White People with Gusto I loved the Australian couple's swing dance on Superstars of Dance last night. They did it with some older swing moves, smoothness and sultriness that you don't often see. http://www.nbc.com/superstars-of-dance/video/clips/boundless-energy/966841 It isn't just the...
