Quirky things that people have done 'in the day' that people would gasp at today..

My father traveled on horseback, by himself at age 14, two days to a rodeo. And Judge Judy once thought it was just awful that a couple of 19-year-old girls took a vacation to Florida by themselves. Everyone in my family up to my generation was on their own by age 19! In fact, my one of my aunts...

Quirky things that people have done 'in the day' that people would gasp at today..

My mother's commute to school was about the same, but as I recall, somebody had a small bus or at least a bigger vehicle. The kids had to ride their horses to the bus stop, and it was very cold some days in northern Wyoming.

1930's/40's Christmas - help with script

Just like It's a Wonderful Life. The book How to Stop Worrying and Start Living by Dale Carnegie gives the account of a ca. 1939 Christmas in New York. A lonely widow, Mrs. William T. Moon, met a couple of orphans in a church and bought them candy and presents. It's in the chapter "How to...

Quirky things that people have done 'in the day' that people would gasp at today..

I agree up to a point--there's a risk in not learning how to deal with life. That's why I don't see what's so great about growing up in the suburbs; for me, at least, there was nothing to do there. Some places are better to play than others. The tiny town where my grandparents lived was...

Quirky things that people have done 'in the day' that people would gasp at today..

In the early 70s... My parents let me stand up in the front seat while they were driving. If I fell asleep in the car, they'd leave me there at night. They also let me play unsupervised in the front yard. I don't even let my dog do any of these things.

    The "Annoying Phrase" Thread

"Give back to the community." A smarmy phrase that should be replaced by simply writing a check or doing a good deed. On a similar note, I don't like the office shakedown: being asked to money or gifts to coworkers you don't see socially, aren't inviting you to their wedding or weekend baby...

Quirky things that people have done 'in the day' that people would gasp at today..

Many kids had to sleep more than one to a bed. In earlier times, some adults did as well. Judith Martin suggests that they probably fantasized about sleeping alone.

Exercises and Pain Management For strength, I hold my head up while I do flutter kicks and bicycle kicks. I started doing this a few months ago when I got a DVD called Ballet Conditioning by Elise Gulan. (The DVD has a section at the end for abdominal exercises.) Shortly after I started doing...

When I had neck problems and TMJ problems, I just put folded towels under my pillow until the height was right. My neck problems included pinched nerves and, for a year after a car wreck, a sprained neck and back. Chiropractic care, a mouth splint, yoga, pain relievers and the passage of time...

Priced-out Londoners turn to empty homes

From the article: Unable to rent out one of its office blocks in the central Soho district, the council turned to an association that found short-term tenants willing to live there for minimal rent - a win-win solution for both sides. Well, yes...charge a reasonable rent and you'll...
