The History/Evolution of Birth Control *Ladies Only*

I think if you're old enough to start a family, you're old enough to decide you don't want to start a family (i.e., have a surgical solution). Both decisions are either difficult or impossible to reverse. I can understand doctors wanting to make sure a patient is making a carefully considered...

    The "Annoying Phrase" Thread

I don't like any medical jargon used by those who aren't in the trade, or used by medical people outside their work. "Meds" sounds like something you get from a psychiatrist or Dr. Feelgood; "stat" makes you sound like you've been watching too many medical dramas.

World leaders in jeans. "power jeans" AHHHH

The contexts shown in the article were casual-looking events (a baseball game, possibly a vacation in Egypt, and walks with other leaders in business-casual clothes). This made me think of the sans-culottes, too. Before the French Revolution in the late 1700s, upper class men wore...

The History/Evolution of Birth Control *Ladies Only*

This friend of mine (no, it's not me) is about 35, divorced and had two stepchildren. I think there's an assumption that at some point, a women will feel she needs to have kids. But while doctors might see women patients when they're trying to conceive, a patient probably isn't going to...

The History/Evolution of Birth Control *Ladies Only*

It's great if you can get one. A friend of mine has been trying to get her tubes tied for years, but the doctors are sure she'll want kids someday. It must be nice to be able to know what someone will be thinking years down the road.

World leaders in jeans. "power jeans" AHHHH

Jeans aren't for all occasions, but I've never seen what's so awful about well fitting jeans in good repair. They're a heck of a lot better, to me, than baggy, rumpled khakis dragging the ground, even though those are passable in most offices.

FACEBOOK: the end of the world as we knew it...

Suppose a person misjudges the character of someone and adds that person as a Facebook friend, then puts out a little information here and there on the site--enough for this friend to figure out when the kids are home alone, where they go to school, where and when they practice sports, etc. Any...

The difference is that catalogs don't contain information that would enable pedophiles to contact the kids. Most sexual abuse of children is done by friends and family.

Amen to that. People talk about privacy--and then put more personal information out there than Big Brother would ever want to know.

Going Native My parents use these cringeworthy* terms. My mother's ancestors were southern and didn't care for books or school, but my dad's father's family was never anywhere near the South or colonial America, and his mother was a college educated teacher. Go figure. *Non-native...

I invited my niece and her daughter to go dancing with me last summer. Never heard back from them. Never got a thank-you for the gift I bought last Christmas. Nevertheless, I'm still buying Christmas gifts this year...all of which I'll be giving to charity.

FACEBOOK: the end of the world as we knew it...

I've seen people watch TV at restaurants. I've seen houseguests arrive for dinner, fix a plate, bypass the table and park themselves in front of the TV. My mother, ex-boyfriend, and certain relatives never shut the damn thing off. My sister-in-law's family, including her 80-year-old mother...

You could say the same thing about TV or any other distraction. A major cause of being socially inept is not getting enough practice socializing, regardless of the cause and regardless of which generation a person belongs to. ETA: There are serious occasions when only a letter or visit will...

When does it become a costume?

Unless you are hermit, you have to care at least a little about what people think. Sometimes we need to make other people feel comfortable. The idea that one has to either wear clothes that are 70 years out of date or dress like a slob is a false dichotomy. There are sharp-looking modern...
