    The Golden Era's *ugliest* clothes

The Room? Well, it has windowpanes. But it's more like a high-rise with sleeves.

    The Golden Era's *ugliest* clothes

It's not so much that the clothes are ugly as they don't suit the person wearing them. The turban makes her long face and head look like an upside-down eggplant. Her ingenue-style dress doesn't go with the world-weary expression (or the turban).

    The "Annoying Phrase" Thread

Could there be a phrase that is any more smug?

USPS Rates Go Up in January

Greyhound will ship packages. I don't know how their rates or services compare to those of the USPS or others. http://www.shipgreyhound.com/company/

    Today I am a "Ma'am"

What's wrong with being old? I guess I was about 12 when someone called me ma'am. At 14 I was mistaken for a teacher. I was born old. To me, ma'am is just a term of respect. Isn't "Excuse me, ma'am" is better than "Hey, lady" or "Hey, you"?

    The "Annoying Phrase" Thread

Strangely, my father wants everybody--even small children--to call him Bud. Publicly, he's extremely egalitarian. Privately, not so much. [huh]

    The "Annoying Phrase" Thread

Some of Miss Manners' readers who are professors and instructors are unhappy because their students call them by their first name. It never occurred to me to call my professors anything but Mr., Ms. or Dr.

    The "Annoying Phrase" Thread

For the most part Americans don't drop their H's. Especially west of the Mississippi.

    The "Annoying Phrase" Thread

I think the point here is that using "an" and dropping the H sound, sounds a little affected on this side of the Atlantic.

    The Golden Era's *ugliest* clothes

Maybe the insects as accessories were the poor woman's lap dog.

    The "Annoying Phrase" Thread

Yes, but I don't think Former President George H. W. Bush is going to fly. People will have changed the channel before it's out of the reporter's mouth.

    The "Annoying Phrase" Thread

"Papa Bush" makes me think of "Papa Titus" (right): "Bush the Elder" sounds better.

What was the last TV show you watched?

Ugly Betty: The 40s and People who Refuse to Age I watched Ugly Betty, The Butterfly Effect Parts 1 and 2. Two things struck me: Wilhemina Slater (Vanessa Williams) has an awesome 40s inspired look. In Part 2, a temp (Kristen Johnson) shows how ridiculous a middle-aged woman can be when...

    The "Annoying Phrase" Thread

Overrefinement It's used by those who are given to swooning. There is such a thing, in writing and in other fields, as overrefinement. Usually it produces slight absurdity and sometimes outright crudity, as in the pose of the social climber who raises her teacup with her little finger...

What Was The Last Movie You Watched?

I almost saw that, but went to Paranormal C***tivity instead. :eusa_doh: I'll add VA to my Netflix queue.

What Was The Last Movie You Watched?

Paranormal Activity. A couple tapes odd happenings in their house. He's a jerk, and she can't get a grip. The very small audience was snickering. People really think this is a scary movie? SPOILER I'd have throttled Mika, too--no demons necessary.

The History/Evolution of Birth Control *Ladies Only*

Birth Control in the 1820s Somewhat pre-Golden Era, but interesting: By the early 1800s, birth control was widely practiced in Europe, especially in France, where by the 1820s it was having a perceptible effect on the birthrate. But knowledge, such as it was, was passed from mother to...
