Marion Davies, literally almost incredibly over-rated on the Internet Movie Data Base,
because there exists a group of super-dedicated Marion Davies fanatics who rate all of her movies at a 10/10, probably numerous times each under different user names.
Katharine Hepburn.
A dozen best actress...
I can't see where a black suit was ever mentioned by Bungholio.
Black overcoat, yes. Black suit, no.
The "Blues Brothers" wore black single-breasted two-piece poorly cut suits with smaller brimmed fedoras, paired with dark glasses and skinny black neckties.
Bungholio specifically said his suit...
The most formal hats, as I've heard/read are:
All always all black and always with a ribbon bound edge, and never with any feathers or any other adornments except a fairly wide ribbon with a side bow-
1.Silk Top Hat
2.Fur felt Top Hat
3.Fur felt Homburg with a center crease crown and no pinches...
No photographs, I'm afraid, but my 1980s' Open Road has about a 5.25" or possibly even lower open crown while my Campdrafts have at least 5.75" open crowns.
The Akubra Campdraft has a considerably taller crown than Stetson Open Roads and a wider, 2-7/8" versus 2-1/2", brim with a considerably more pronounced flange than the nearly flat Open Road one.
My 1980s' Open Road is also over half an ounce lighter in weight than my Campdrafts.
It would be good to know a bit more about what you mean by "formal fedora".
Homburgs are considered to be considerably more "formal" than fedoras.
However, I would venture to guess that you would probably want a fedora with a bound brim edge and a fairly wide ribbon.
If so, here's a nice one...
Big sale on all most of their sweaters, not just turtleneck/polo,
http://www.woolovers.us/sale.aspx?gender=m
Love these folks, especially their after Xmas sale, which has started earlier than previously with largely lower prices than in earlier years.
Found something that I failed to resist, as well.
Woomera with a 6.69 inch (!) tall open crown,
and a CEO for good measure (only an additional $2 to ship a second hat).
Thank you for the heads up, Motorcyclist.
Folks here seem to like to think that the Akubra RM is the same hat as the Akubra Campdraft, but I would beg to differ.
My RM has a much flatter brim than my Campdrafts and it is considerably lighter in weight, 4.8 oz. in contrast to 5.3 oz. and 5.7 oz. for the Campdrafts.
It also is only sold...
Here's a few screenshots from the film "Goodbye, Mr. Chips", portraying mountain climbing and hiking in the Austrian Alps prior to WWI, where the male amateur climbers wear neckties, suits with waistcoats, and carry walking sticks, when hiking and climbing while on vacation.
Robert Donat...
The Greer Garson character had finger sandwiches in her bag.
I would think that a cigarette lighter would be preferable to matches as you wouldn't have to worry about dampness, although Zippo didn't start manufacturing their "windproof" lighters until about 1936, so I don't know just what sort...
Robert Donat and Greer Garson stranded on a mountain by heavy fog while climbing.
(The fog is below them.)
Depiction of pre-WWI mountain climbing in the Alps in the great classic 1939 film "Goodbye, Mr. Chips".
