Waterproof? No way. Not mine, at least.
First drop of water immediately goes right through it.
Now, there's a leather version of that same hat.
Oil that one, and it really is waterproof.
There's at least one thread somewhere on this forum with rather explicit instructions and photographs of how to make a hatband with a bow.
I would think that most any competent tailor or seamstress should be able to do this.
Sewing on a length of ribbon to make a bound brim edge should be even...
Sold only in the U.S.A., Australian-made Akubra Adventurer (different hat from Australian-sold Akubra Adventurer).
Considerably lighter weight and softer felt than any other Akubra that I own, including three Squatters, two Bushmen and a Sydney.
5-5/8" open crown
3-1/8" x 2-3/4" raw edge unbound...
From one Free Stater to another.
Oilcloth is way too hot to wear during our usual summers.
If it doesn't let water through it doesn't let much air through either.
Sunbody hats are relatively very heavy and their cotton sweatbands get soaked with sweat in practically no time at all.
Akubra hemps...
The Territory and Riverina both have 102 mm brims, which are quite a lot wider than your preferred 83 mm brim width.
I have a Territory, and it is one really thick and stiff hat, nothing at all like any of my three Squatters.
I have heard tell that the Riverina is made of the same sort of felt...
So why won't it do?
Too narrow a ribbon?
You can always replace it, or put a pugaree over it, as I did, so that you can always easily go back to the original ribbon.
Akubra Bushman - available only from U.S. A. sellers. Not sold in Australia.
It's just as tall as an Akubra Squatter, but it has an 83mm wide brim, and it's made by Akubra.
5-1/2" tall open crown
3-1/4" wide bound brim
Nullabor Tan or Moonstone...
Akubra Coober Pedy, Santone Fawn
Akubra Cattleman, Sand
Both shipped today from Everything Australian (with no waiting period!), and should arrive by the end of the week.
All that you need to do to re-shape this hat into one with an upswept rear brim is to wet it.
That's what I did, and it's holding its new shape just fine.
I've purchased a fair number of items from them over a number of years.
Never any problems. Everything that they listed as being in stock on their website, always was.
Everything was just as pictured and described, and everything arrived at the other end of the continent within a week.
Hat Dandy,
Thanks for the photographs and your review.
I am hoping that you can supply one more bit of information that I find to be extremely important to know about a hat, but which nearly no one will ever supply. Perhaps you might?
What is the weight of this hat?
I have one of these "treated to be water and stain resistant with pinch and hatband protector" panamas.
I went for a pleasant little stroll, nearly all downhill, through the District of Columbia, from the Free State line, down to the Potomac, on a nice cool but sunny 95 degree summer day while...
Some drawbacks to expensive straw hats are:
a.They will fail to impress most anyone since hardly anyone is knowledgeable enough to appreciate them.
b.Even if someone is knowledgeable enough to appreciate a fine panama hat, they still have to get close enough to get a good look at it.
c.You can...
As I recall, as of last year, all of Panama Hat Co. of St. Augustine's hats were "treated" to be water and stain resistant and additionally had "pinch protectors" to make them all the hotter and less comfortable. Okay for sitting in the shade or air-conditioning. Not so good for actually doing...
The ultimate panama, and other hot weather, hat movie has got to be Warner Brothers "Torrid Zone" from 1940, expertly directed by William Keighley, with a truly stellar superstar cast of James Cagney (with a mustache) and Pat O'Brien (at their fast-talking, wise-cracking best), together with Ann...
Ginseng,
"PanamaHatsDirect and PanamaHatMall have decent Cuenca hats at decent prices, but they come with cotton sweatbands and there's the problem of the hats not necessarily being as described or pictured."
The first PanamaHatsDirect "Havana" Cuenca hat that I bought was just as pictured and...
$150 for the Tesis, and everything else mentioned should be under $60, disregarding shipping costs, as per Ginseng's requested price range.
For "better quality" panamas at "better quality" prices, check out the Panama Hat thread, or send several thousand dollars, or more, to Brent Black.
