    Dressing well returns?

Even most people who didn't dress preppy made an effort to look nice. Hair was washed and combed, clothes more or less fit, torsos were covered and any mooning that happened was on purpose. You don't know what you've got until it's gone.

    Dressing well returns?

A few years ago at the office, a young staff person asked a 50-year-old senior manager whether it was OK to leave a button-down collar unbuttoned. The senior manager asked if he was talking about skateboarders or adults at a CPA firm. Maybe it's just that Denver is behind the curve, but my...

    The "Annoying Phrase" Thread

"Matchy-matchy." As in, a suit is too matchy-matchy. A red belt and red shoes are too matchy-matchy. Why? Because it's trendy to rebel against bothering to match your outfit--never mind that matching is easier than trying to find four coordinating colors.

Eating smaller meals and having a nutritious snack between meals helps keep you trim.

    Ecperience a WW2 POW Camp

It reminds me of the STanford Prison Experiment, which was ended after six days because the guards were becoming sadistic and the prisoners were mentally breaking down. http://www.prisonexp.org/ You couldn't pay me to experience a WWII POW camp.

Who was the ODDest person you ever knew?...

We had Barrel Man in Denver. He'd go to Broncos games wearing a barrel with suspenders, and who knows what underneath it. And no, Mile High was not a covered stadium.

Who was the ODDest person you ever knew?...

I've heard of sack cloth and ashes, but that's ridiculous. Not good for you, either: dirty oil is full of gasoline. I hope he wasn't a smoker.

Who was the ODDest person you ever knew?...

I just thought of another odd one. There was a girl I was pretty good friends with in grade school, until she turned mean. The only reason I can think of was what seemed to me like a minor disagreement over a desk. Then she started stepping on my shoes and--this was two years later--would turn...

Who was the ODDest person you ever knew?...

The oddest people I've ever known were suffering from mental illness, a brain aneurysm or the effects of long-term drug use. Aside from them, I've known a few odd people. At a previous job, a coworker and I got along well until she came back from a week-long vacation. Then she started in with...

"Lindy Hop" on Dancing with the Stars

Since you asked, Miss N, I'd rather see well done disco than badly done lindy. Those who want to showcase a Golden Era swing dance have a choice of charleston, balboa, East Coast, jive, shag, and solo and group jazz dances. I've seen less-experienced dancers do some really entertaining...

"Lindy Hop" on Dancing with the Stars

My only objection to a lindy hop segment on a weekly show is that even great dancers can't learn it in a week. Charleston would be a better choice.

Who Did You Just See Live?

Folk and Swing Last night I heard Strum Therapy at Swallow Hill, a folk music center. They played some of the best acoustical guitar I've heard at last night's Christmas concert. Wessler was a good MC for the show--she was funny and had good timing, besides having a beautiful voice, honed by...

    Smoking and hospitals

I've heard of people smoking through a hole in their throat. One reason I wouldn't want to smoke is that I'd hate to feel such a compulsion.
