Yes, I admire people more for their character than their work, although people of good character generally produce good work. That doesn't necessarily go the other way. Musicians in particular might produce glorious work while leading lives that I, for one, cannot say I admire.

If you alter it as you are describing, it will still be the same waistcoat with the same character and basic appearance. Besides, it's always been common practice to have clothes altered. I don't see this as desecration.
These are all good reasons not to get a class ring, but I'm sure the reason kids don't get them anymore is that they're passe. I can't remember the last time I saw someone wearing one.
