Was this supposed to be a preview for the fashion that comes two years later?
I'd prefer the shirt to have a lighter color. That dark red in my opinion only goes with a very light colored sportcoat.
The tie should not be in a (near) same color as the sportcoat. If it has to be brown (I'd prefer a different color for a brown sportcoat) at least a different shade or with...
I find it quite interesting how dominant single breasted overcoats were in late 30's and 40's US fashion as compared to Europe, where the double breasted Ulsters and Paletots reigned well into the 50's.
Climatic differences certainly were a factor.

Certainly many gentleman had longer hair now and then, as they weren't at the barber/hairdresser daily, but it strikes me as unusual because such illustrations usually depict an ideal state of affairs, also...
Yes this was certainly the case with the photopage of the best dressed students. It was mentioned specifically that some of the clothes were purchased before WPB rules.
I paid attention to this detail on all illustrations dating since the WPB announcement. I noticed absolutely no cuffs until January 1944. So it seems the illustrators were (instructed to be) specific about that detail. Would be strange therefore that the reappearance of cuffs was merely artistic...

I should have specified that I was thinking more about early 1960's British (and German) fashion, which was still more conservative. Lapels weren't always super-narrow and a lot of features were still retained in the "old manner".

Is it just me or are you guys also getting strong early 60's vibes from a lot of these illustrations from 1938/39?
Plenty of rather narrow trousers, boxy cuts, double vents, short and slim lapels, stingy hats and caps, short overcoats... particularly the semi-sports, campus and country...
