Stevie! I remember talking to Stevie Ray for about an hour before a show he played for a charity I worked with in college at UT Austin. He was wearing one of his flat brim "bolero/pimp" hats with a purple feather that seemed to be about a foot long. I was amazed at what a sweet, soft-spoken...
I had one blue hat about a year ago, deep midnight blue with a crimson edge binding and ribbon. It was the sharpest hat I've ever seen in person, but was too tight so I passed it on. Someday I'll get Art or Tony to make me one just like it. I think it was a Borsalino, but I've blocked the...
And.. I'm out. I'm up to my ears in silverbelly hats, and the "sand" Akubras I've owned haven't been anywhere near what I consider "Silverbelly." Checked out the Katoomba version, and as much as I love doing business with The Hattery/Hatsdirect, at $180+ U.S., it's too close to custom (VS...
I would agree there's few things that smell better, other than maybe a new handmade stringed instrument, with that woody smell. I've also grown up with the many smells associated with leather, and have grown very attached to the smell of saddle soap, RM Williams Saddle Dressing, rawhide, undyed...
Jared - I'll be joining you in celebrating Joe's birthday, been a fan for over 30 years. I was lucky enough to see a few Clash shows in my younger days, never got to see Joe solo, sadly. My 6 month old boy has several Strummer onesies, time to put one on. Frank
Campdraft can be found in green, and is easily styled as a fedora. The edge binding actually helps it to have a "snap brim" of sorts. I love mine, and if you're a bigger guy, you'll pull it off fine. Second choice definitely the Fed IV from Hatsdirect. Frank
Brad- newer hats labeled silverbelly are tan-ish, but most of my older Stetson and Resistol westerns labeled silverbelly are more grey or "silver. " Those are my favorites. Today you have to look for "silver mist" or "dove" to get what I think of as silverbelly.
Congratulations Sam. My 6 month old boy is asleep on my chest as I'm posting. I bought him some tiny vintage hats when he was born, and he's getting closer to wearing them every day. 16 and 3/4" and counting! Lots of really tiny men's hats out there, super cheap because they're so little. My...
Pre-merger Resistols are great. I've been wearing Resistol western hats since I was a small child, and put them through some pretty nasty abuse, including: rain, dust storms, cattle roundups, horse wrecks, drunks with brightly colored drinks, etc... They stand up very well. I still buy...
I find "hipster" culture funny, as it really is nothing new. In the 80s, when I attended college in Austin, there were always guys around we called hipsters, as Austin was a strange mix in those days of good old boys, "hippies," and college students. A hipster for us was someone who only...
The "thin" factor, rather than tall, may have more to do with it, as suggested. Also genetics, I suppose. My grandfather died a couple of years ago at age 99, and he was right at six feet three inches. His father died prematurely at 94 because he fell off his roof fixing his TV antenna and...
With great head size must come great patience. I'm a 7 7/8 long oval, try finding vintage in that size on eBay. Having said that, I've scored several vintage hats over the last few years just by waiting and watching. I've also gotten a few off eBay, and some from fellow loungers, including a...
Dave - tonyb is someone I usually listen to, and you won't get any coy little games from him. He's one of the finest hatters around, and a straight shooter. He's right about the hat being a good one, I've got one just like it in an even rarer size, 7 7/8, and it's a hell of a nice hat. Not...
Old American Hat Co. hats are great, I've got one from the 60s that is still in excellent shape, after countless soakings and re-shapings. The more recent ones (different ownership, possibly?) are not at the same level, from what I've experienced. If you can find an older one in anything above...
Sometimes westerns are disguised as Sci-Fi, like the aforementioned Star Wars. Last night I watched "Priest," which looked like a vampire v.s. humans movie. What it really was: a mishmash of samurai and most of the plot of "The Searchers." The title character was even thinking about killing...
Many will disagree, but I thought "All the Pretty Horses" was a great modern western. It stayed fairly close to the book, and the hero stuck to his principles until the end, much like the old-school westerns. I don't mind more morally ambiguous anti-hero type Westerns, but I found this one...
BR - Does that string come through holes in the hat? That's just about exactly where I usually place my holes for a double-loop horsehair stampede string, and end up wearing it snugged up at the base of my skull in back, like a drill sergeant, when not riding in high wind. I've never had much...
