Dating a boater based on price?

Jimmy you are a crack-up! I'm not sure what I was trying to determine at this point. I guess I was surprised that, if my logic held true (a big if, I know), that a boater/skimmer from the late 30s-early 40s could cost as much as a good felt hat. John

Dating a boater based on price?

I know there has been some work done by members of the forum dating Stetsons based on price but can this be apply to other hats? I have a Brodt's boater with a $5.00 price tag. Brodt's moved to 423 Eleventh St. NS in Washington DC (the address on my hat) in 1933. Boaters pretty much went out...

    Boater faction!

I finally got myself a boater/skimmer. Made by Brodt's in Washington DC. I did a little research on Brodt's and they were at the address on my hat starting in 1933. It has a mesh covering the inside of the hat that you can't really see in the photos. I've never seen that before? It also has...

    Good Repro Looks

Has anybody seen a movie called "Mr. North" starring Anthony Edwards, Robert Mitchum, Lauren Bacall, and Henry Dean Stanton? Supposed to take place in 1926 and I thought the suits and hats were great but I am no good judge of this sort of thing. I can't find any decent photos from the movie...

What to look for in bespoke vs off-the-rack suits?

Doggy Darb, I really appreciate your post! I am still learning how to examine these garments. I don't know if I would know "exquisite" from pretty darn good. If a person's name is on a retailer's/maker's tag, would that suggest bespoke or simply made-to-measure? Thanks again! John

Giant Pith Helmet Thread of Doom

Standard kit for the gentleman-officer during the Boer War - Wolseley pattern pith helmet, Stohwasser gaiters, silver-tipped swagger-stick, and Mauser Broomhandle purchased at Westley Richards (and so marked). I have a photo around here somewhere of me wearing these but I can't find the dang thing.

Dillinger Days at work by myself

I think it was an opportunity to be stylish and dress as close to the 1930s as I could at work. Paying homage to Dillinger or the nascent FBI was not what I had in mind. "Dillinger Days" just sounds better than Nascent FBI Day" or "Stylish 1930s Day" or whatever. And up196, I LOVE your...

What cigar (or pipe) did you smoke today?

Padron 1964 Anniversario - churchill size with three fingers of Glenlivet 12 year old. I'm in a rut but it's a good rut. John

Dillinger Days at work by myself

Most of the folks that I work with didn't have a clue who Dillinger was. As for people objecting to me glorifying him? I would answer that it was all in fun and if me dressing up is seen as shallow and uncaring toward the one man he killed and numerous that he terrified 76 years ago then so be...

    Public Enemies

I better get a move on and see the movie for the second time in the theater. Me thinks it's fading fast. Stephen Dorf as Homer Van Meter pointing a modified 351 Winchester during a bank job in Public Enemies:

    Zootshooting

I've read there rules and they seem open to guns other than the Thompson and 1911. I wonder if they would let me use my 351 Winchester with 10 round mags and cast bullets?

    What Are You Reading

Public Enemies by Burroughs last week and Baby Face Nelson by Nickel and Helmer this week. I'm looking for a cheap copy of the Alvin Karpis Story by Karpis and Trent next. Obviously, I've got this interest in 1930s gangsters that I can't seem to shake.

What to look for in bespoke vs off-the-rack suits?

I'm not at all clear about what characteristics in a suit suggests it was handmade vs mass-produced back in the 1930s-1950s. I would very much appreciate if someone could let me know what to look for. Thanks for the help! John
