Gray & white herringbone coat with dark brown pants?

I don't know if I have the talent to put this together either but I like the way the colors look in the scans. I think it's like cptjeff wrote - you have to balance it out. As I've pretty much been off-balance since about 1976 this isn't looking good, but I appreciate the advice and comments!

    Spectator Shoes

Thanks for the info Tomasso - I went looking to see if I could determine which manufacturer made my shoes and found something at the Style Forum - http://www.styleforum.net/showthread.php?t=94886 "PRL with 'Ralph Lauren', followed by "Benchmade in England" - Crockett & Jones, or Alfred...

    Spectator Shoes

I bought these Ralph Lauren Specs to start my collection. Rare size 12: MsStabby - those are some interesting green spectators! Are they Disco era or older? John

Gray & white herringbone coat with dark brown pants?

I appreciate the replies to my question. Here are a couple of more scans from the forum stickies above: Kid riding the bicycle: Another with brown coat and light gray pants - never the reverse - there must be a reason for this, like it don't look so good?

Gray & white herringbone coat with dark brown pants?

Here it is in reverse - brown coat with medium gray pants. I wonder if this color combination can be reversed? I borrowed this from Marc Chevalier's great "Many 30s images" sticky above:

Gray & white herringbone coat with dark brown pants?

Is this a frowned upon combination? Some of the terrific style book photos posted at the beginning of the Suits section seems to show brown and gray as an occasional option but it's mostly brown coat with gray pants? Thanks! John

Apparently there were pimp hats in the 1940s as well? Wormser Royal Luxury in pimpin' purple: And worn by yours truly who doesn't think of himself as a pimp:

    Wormser hat find

Wearing the hat - my camera has something against purple but this is pretty close. 40's herringbone coat, white shirt, blue/purple paisley tie and dark blue pocket square. I talked to a friend he said it was a "white balance" problem. I just can't find the manual.

Speaking of Nick Charles, what was he always drinking?

I got tired of depending on Netflix for my Thin Man fix and bought the box set of DVDs yesterday and watching 4 of the 6 Thin Man movies over the weekend, I think those that said that Nick would drink about anything are on the money. Even in other peoples apartments and homes he drank whatever...

    Wormser hat find

I appreciate all the kind words about the Wormser. I'll work on a me-wearing-it shot - you people are gluttons for punishment. Oh, and it's a hard to find 7 1/2. John

I forgot to show the ribbon. None of my other hats has a ribbon tied like this one (and again the hat isn't this blue):

    Wormser hat find

rmrdaddy, I didn't find any of the things that I was looking for at the gun show. Hence the pessimism at the antique shop. At least I scored a nice hat. John

    Wormser hat find

On my way back from the gun show today I thought that I would stop in at an "antique" store that I haven't been to in years. I walked in asked if they had any hats and waited for the inevitable, no, followed by something about how they sell as soon as they come in. Well, the lady said yes and...

    Spectator Shoes

I went through this thread and there was some talk about soft colors vs warm colors in terms of what spectators should be worn but I'm not quite getting it. This matching thing is hard even with all the terrific examples in scanned books at the beginning of the Suits section and all the advice...

Speaking of Nick Charles, what was he always drinking?

I've rediscovered the Thin Man series and my love of William Powell and Myrna Loy together on screen. What a couple! Anyhow, it seemed that Nick was always drinking something but many times it was in a smaller stemmed glass, dark in color that had to be mixed in a shaker. What cocktail would...

    Carnation in lapel?

How many of you wear a carnation (or other flower) in your lapel on occasion? If you do, is it real or (gasp) fake? Do you just stop in a flower-shop and buy a single flower? Keep a bunch on hand? Grow them yourself? I like this look but would love to hear others experiences. Thanks! John

    1940s art deco garbage find!

We've used a product called Milsek polish for decades and it's always done a great job nourishing the antiques (and the modern stuff too). It's a pleasant smelling oil that the furniture just seems to absorb. Unfortunately, it is not easy to find. Terrific sideboard! John
