A BS in Education (Biology/Gen Sci) and a year teaching in inner-city Chicago in the CPS. Even though I had a relatively high draft lottery number in the first round (260), I gave up teaching and joined the Peace Corps as a health volunteer in Korea. Three years in Korea and two years of grad...
I just picked up one of these. It doesn't power up, so I taking it to a guy up in Dayton OH that thrives on repairing them. I'm looking forward to hearing what I can pull in… maybe one of those number broadcasts.
I just picked up this Stetson Shantung Qualifier at an estate sale this weekend - a Dee Pickett signature. I haven't seen anything about the Qualifier at the Lounge, though I may have missed it buried in a Stetson thread. I was hoping to get a light hat like this for the summer and got lucky @...
My wife works as a dialysis nurse and she clocks at 4:15 - 10 hr shifts. She's wasted by 6 PM shortly after I get home. She's chronically fatigued. But not as bad as when we owned a bakery - 2:30 AM to make the donuts so I could get them to the gas stations by 6.
Closest I've come was living in a boarding house in Seoul, ROK that was the last stop for young (but of age) Korean women that we're moving to Japan to work in tea houses, wine houses, etc. My claim to fame was access to duty-free liquor at the UN exchange. The house mom was wicked, so thoughts...
I got the feeling old hint when the cute 30-somethings in my building invited me out to quiz night at the local bar because I new all the oldies, and they introduce me as the designated dad... and I was still a few years shy of 60. Ouch!
Mom forced me to take piano lessons... trumpet was so much cooler. Many, many band years and I never made it past 2nd chair. 1st chair studied under Renold Schilke, principal trumpet for the Chicago Symphony (he also worked in his factory pushing the dent balls up the bell). The horns are all...
We bought our 1923 Tudor-style after it had been "upgraded" per the listing. First thing, we replaced every contractor-pac ceiling fixture with a period fixture we loved. Buying them over time was the greatest fun! Restoring the look was the smartest investment we could have made, plus truly...
I spent years on-call in Chicago coordinating organ donation cases. We would schedule the OR for nights so we wouldn't bump any of the elective cases scheduled during the day or early evening. We had as much time as we needed and never had to deal with traffic when transporting organs to local...
I picked up a black 60's Dobbs in a local vintage store. I took it to Batsakes in Cincinnati to clean and he totally restored it. It was sold by one of his competitors 2 blocks down that he out-survived. It's still my favorite.
I came across this steel hat block this morning and wondered if it had any value as a collectable. (Note - its labeled a hat saver at the whopping price of $24) It has a plate across the bottom with three 1" holes. It's stamped 7 1/2 with no other markings that I noticed. Is this used in a...
High School lunch room. The announcement came over the school PA. I was a JFK fan and because of him, I joined the Peace Corps. Although in retrospect, he was no different than the current crop... Bay of Pigs and the tribulations of Otto Otepka (Google him) - he was part of my not-so-extended...
OK - I got it! As it was a local on-line auction, I had a chance to handle it and try it on. 7 3/8 perfect fit and look. This could be the buy of the year - 16 bids and $22. I'll pick it up in two days, then a pic or two for the site.
I had enough money left to get my camel-colored Hopkins...
I've been trying to describe Pyramid Hat Man to a twenty-something and I get the "what planet are you from look".
A question to our UK friends of the London variety... does Pyramid Hat Man still exist? I saw him once and did a double take. This was before I heard the alleged Dominic story...
There's a sense of style among the older generation that I appreciate. Notice how the ladies spare no expense to do it right. I appreciate compliments from someone that appreciates a hat as more than a novelty.
BTW... I spent 15 years west of the Brat Stop in Salem - 50 & 83.
OK - I'm going for it. I saw a homburg like this w/o dents and it was going to be my first hat. Too bad it fell down on my ears. This is my chance. With luck, pics will follow Tuesday. Thanks all!
Stetson St. Regis buy - 24 hrs to decide
This look is appealing to me at the moment... the price is right at a local shop, so any obvious problems in the eyes of the experts? I'd consider taking it back to the non-dented look - a quick trip to Batsake. Thoughts?
I was at Basakes in Cincinnati this afternoon and he has a wall of straw. He let me just handle them - beautiful! I was under strict orders not to come home with another hat. Well, spring is just starting and I have a full summer to work on her.
In the meantime, I was joined by two guys I...
