They seem to think that the higher the price, the better it must be, and someone both rich and dumb enough will come along eventually. What's the point of selling something for a low price?
No idea. I'd consider re-dying, or oiling the leather with the same formula that was used originally, and hope that it would even out, but there's no telling what the results will be like until you do it.
