So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

The area I grew up in is very touchy-feely. As a woman, I still have to fight the urge to give a hug to anyone I've just met socially when we part. Also it's weird as heck to have friendships with people I don't hug on parting. So I'd recommend avoiding at least the part of NY state I was...

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

I was recently in Berlin for work and while walking down the street an older gentleman (older than me, but not geriatric) said something to me in German with a big smile. I speak no German so I assumed it was a compliment of some sort. If it wasn't, oh well.

"I can do this." Well, isn't that just the inspirational quote for a generation.

    Your Most Disturbing Realizations

I want to be cremated purely because it's the last time I want my body to be disturbed. I've made this clear. If my body could be buried touching the earth I'd have no problem being buried. But the idea of trying to preserve my body or keep it from returning to the soil bothers me. Also, I...

    Your Most Disturbing Realizations

My desire for a funeral is more for my kids. Particularly if I die while they are young. In that case, they'll never have me in many of the life situations I'd like to give them advice in. I've met a few adults who lost their parents when children or really young adults (under 25), and the...

    Your Most Disturbing Realizations

We did our wills when we had our first child, mostly to ensure she (now they) was taken care of if my husband and I both died, financially and guardianship wise. There's specific people in my family who I did not want to have our children or make financial decisions for them if they are minors...

    Your Most Disturbing Realizations

Do normal people not think about this sort of thing? I've had plans for awhile... right down to the music to be played. I've also had the misfortune of losing a couple of friends relatively recently, so I've seen a variety of funerals and can compare, contrast, and pick from those what I like.

    Autumnal Thoughts........

It is 5:30 (and I'm still at my desk and probably will be for the next hour, BOO) and it is getting dark outside. I love fall, but I am always thankful I don't live further north this time of year. In the summer, I of course, kick myself for living too fall south to enjoy nights full of...

2016 Nobel prize in literature goes to..............

I think the Nobel prizes can have a lot to do with how we remember critical discoveries and the scientists who found them. Who discovered the double helix of DNA? Chances are you named Watson and Crick, two of the 3 Nobel Prize winners for DNA that year. I think the Noble went a long way in...

2016 Nobel prize in literature goes to..............

By politics I meant small "politics" rather than official political ones. I would assume that the people who give out the prizes want some notoriety of the actions of their organization. If they didn't, they wouldn't release this information to the press and do it in secret. But, instead, they...

2016 Nobel prize in literature goes to..............

Well, you could argue that some of the greats that have not been awarded the Nobel prize for literature were Dylan's contemporaries. Take Vitanola's suggestion of John Updike. Rabbit, Run was published in 1960 and finished the Rabbit series in 1990. That makes him very much a contemporary of...

Philosophical: The difference between (real) "friends" and "buddies".

When my real friend told me this, I had the temptation to jump off the couch, drive to "friend''s house, and slash "friend's" tires. I believe "friend" is jealous of me, professionally. She's thrown a lot of wrenches into the gears (not purposefully, but perhaps subconsciously) in my time...

Philosophical: The difference between (real) "friends" and "buddies".

When I had cancer, I had a few very unexpected people show up to help me and my family... to clean, visit, bring meals, or do rides. Some people went above and beyond. In this way, I have many more than the 4 people I actually consider my friends. A few disappointed. One woman, who said I was...

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

I think there's a much... broader display of personality/ temperament in cats that are raised well. Most female cats are like you've described, even the most gentle I've found always had an edge to them. I've had 4 male cats (three black, one orange) who were sweethearts. The last black cat I...

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

This cat, Marmalade, had certainly seen better days, so I would believe it. He had a pin in one leg (car accident when he was 1) and had lived in a two-bedroom household with 5 other cats and 4 to 6 dogs (before he came to us at 13). The family lost their home to foreclosure. I can't imagine he...

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

We had a cat who lived to 18, whom I think only lived as long as he did because of top-notch dental care, as when he joined us at age 13 his mouth was a complete mess: he smelled awful because of rot. By the end of his life (kidney failure, 5 years after he moved in) he had most of his teeth...

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

I have to admit, this seems odd to me. I remember one professor who brought his lab into class (it was barely not-a-puppy-anymore). It spent the entire class running between the desks and (accidentally) scaring the living daylights out of my friend who was afraid of dogs. I wouldn't dream of...

Vintage Things That Have Disappeared In Your Lifetime?

Between the blue and red M&Ms (being a child of the 80s) it's like they are a different candy. I used to always sort out the tan and brown ones and eat those last in a weird scheduling order... they were my favorite. (I sort my candy by color and flavor in prescribed order depending upon what...

Vintage Things That Have Disappeared In Your Lifetime?

I miss tan M&Ms. We drink whole milk. Kids under 2 need whole milk, the fat helps brain development. We have an ice cream place near here (a shed out in the middle of a cow field) that makes the best shakes. My favorites use blueberry or orange icecream.

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

I am a hoof to snout advocate. That means I believe we should use 100% of any slaughtered or killed animal that is possible to be used. I also have 0% problem with cultures that eat dog or cat meat, as long as it is is humanely killed. I do have a tremendous problem with two two things: 1...
