    Show us your vintage home!

This is not meant to criticize that house (its lovely) but it lacks the tall 2 over 2 (or 2 over 1) windows I'd expect to see in a Queen Anne.

Humorously or fascinatingly bizarre things that have happened to you in your life

I always thought this was weird, but both my parents and my husband and I share the loss of an uncle/ aunt. Both my mother and father lost their youngest maternal uncle (their respective mother's youngest brother) to a bull goring. My parents had only one family member gored (apiece). Both my...

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

I think my car holds nominal 16 gallons... I regularly get 350 (winter) or 400 (summer) miles with plenty to spare out of a tank. I could squeeze 400 in the winter with my snow tires, but due to some childhood experiences of getting stuck on a desolated isolated country road I don't drain it and...

The newer Subarus do a bit better on gas mileage. I get around 30 MPG with my all seasons and around 25 MPG with my snows... but I have "sticky" tires over slick ones. I have 80,000+ miles on the thing and so I think that's the mileage that's going to be.

Apparently none of the local department stores will replace a watch battery. The woman who handed my watch back to me with a look of distaste, "This isn't worth replacing the battery in. you should buy a new one. but you could try the jeweler downtown." Went to the jeweler and the replaced it...

I want an orange car next. (Seriously.) My father taught me stick by taking me on the large hill (first mountain of the adirondacks) on a Friday afternoon north bound while screaming at me, "you're gonna drop my transmission!" I didn't stall out but I was permanently scarred. My husband has...

    Christmas Toy Recommendations Of 1939

This is a good list for today, I think. The kids are getting the following for Christmas: Girl, aged 3: Preschool scooter (santa), a toy castle, crafting supplies (pom poms, stickers, etc.) Boy, aged 1: large dump truck (santa), ferry bath toy, and doll They are both getting some ornaments for...

    1945-1953: Generally a forgotten era?

I snorted tea out of my nose. This is incredibly unfair, it was hot. -------------- Admittedly, I don't know much about this period in detail. I know there was an extreme housing shortage after the war as the baby boom started. My maternal grandparents had bought a small cape in the city where...

    Philosophical: What is real "home(land)"?

Mountains or large hills with trees. And running water. And rocks. Lots of rocks, apparently. Like, so many many many rocks. Apparently I didn't have enough of picking rocks (up out of the fields) when I was a kid. I bought a place where all the rocks washed down out of the hills and deposited...

Vintage Things That Have Disappeared In Your Lifetime?

I've postdated a few checks in my life.

I've lost 4-5 pounds so far, which is pretty good (I started my "eat less" and "walk more" diet November 1st). It's just an issue that my BMI was 21.9, and to keep my lymphedema risk low, it's important to keep it at least below 20.5 and preferably below 19.5. My goal is to lose another 4-5...

When your doctor told you that you have to lose 15 pounds and everybody is talking about mushy peas, milkshakes, avocados, and apparently what is a French fry sandwich. Thanks guys...

Vintage Things That Have Disappeared In Your Lifetime?

The school I teach at used to put up several trees and a menorah in the hallways. The items are owned by the school, but when the staff member who did it moved from an administrative assistant to a higher position that opened (and her old position was cut) these items no longer go up. Quite...

Vintage Things That Have Disappeared In Your Lifetime?

What I don't understand is that everyone I've ever spoken to has said "this type of life skills should be taught" but yet you don't see a school teach it. Are we (lay people) really that voiceless in education? I regularly teach grad students how mortgage's and loans work. Most have zero...

Vintage Things That Have Disappeared In Your Lifetime?

It was mandatory in 7th grade (and either 6th or 8th too) for both sexes when I was in school. I graduated high school in 1999. I learned how to budget in home ec. (I was in 4-H so I knew how to sew and bake/cook). However, it's the only class I had that taught budgeting and saving; how to use...

Please tell me that these $600 dresses are made by someone who owns the shop. I don't hold out hope they are, but you never know.

I had a hard time keeping my potassium level up when I was pregnant, so avocados were on my list of foods to eat, along with potatoes, bananas, and v8. Even with 2 avocados, a can of v8, a cup of carrot juice, and 2 potatoes a day, I had difficulty keeping my levels up so I had to supplement...

At two airports, they've told me that anyone with anything "artificial" can't go through the scanner. I've got a number of biopsy clips and the security people just stared at me when I asked if that is the type of artificial stuff they're talking about, or if it just mechanical stuff like a...

That apple cutter is worth its weight in gold. Made an apple crisp in about 5 minutes the other day thanks to my peeler/corer/slicer.
