Agreed
I agree that these are really nice lids at a great price. But I wager they would get more attention from prospective buyers if the hat size was listed in the title of the post. It would also save saps like me the disappointment of having to read through the whole thread only to find...
Yeah, I bet Noggintops would trim it - they offer trimming on a bunch of different lids. But really, if you're looking for more of a formal city hat and want a 2-1/2" brim, maybe you should consider an Akubra Sydney - very nice, less expensive and no trimming needed.
Yikes, what a shame. I guess even small towns in Wales need a village idiot - too bad this one had just enough gray matter to get himself connected to the internet....
Inexpensive straw teardrop hats
We seem to have similar tastes (moderate brim, c-crown) and I've been doing a lot of looking lately. If they came big enough, I would get a Stetson Retro, which many vendors have. Also, David Morgan has the Panama Fedora which looks a bit nicer, but is more...
The boater looks good Mr. E. - it's certainly good to be able to put your hands on a hat before you buy it. Also good to hear the Executive Shop is still there and has some selection for our big melons - I may be down that way in the near future.
:offtopic: Also, a belated thanks for posting...
My favored brim width is 2-1/4", right in the No-Man's land between stingy and wide, I think. I always think of a 2" brim is a stingy, not borderline. I do go wider for summer straws - my kayaking hat has a 3" brim, looks kinda goofy, but not more so than the life jacket...
Man, that Adam is nice!
This thread reminded me of this linen/seagrass outback-style hat from Pendleton. I can't seem to embed the photo from the listing, here's the link:
Seagrass/linen hat
Tarp hat
I'm not sure whether this recycled tarp hat will appeal to anyone - I saw it in the email flyer from Noggintops yesterday:
The Real Deal Tarp Hat
There is a wire in the brim, but the seams and lettering are apparently random. Not exactly elegant, but it looks tough, at least.
This was my first thought also - Henry Blake's Korean custom homecoming suit after being cycled home from the war. Only the tailor had no idea which direction the stripes were supposed to run...
Agreed - I gave away my blue/white cotton seersucker suit - just too warm for me. I much prefer featherweight tropical wool for a summer suit. I also prefer gray/white seersucker, although you don't see it nearly as much (that may be why I prefer it, I suppose).
This vendor in NYC has the Scout stiffener and will take international orders, but you have to phone it in:

I've heard good things in other posts about the Retro, too bad it doesn't come in XXL or I'd have one myself. You might also take a look at this Panama from David Morgan:

It's very similar in its proportions, and has some nice...
Not a bad looking hat, that Capas - the Jaxon wool hats at Village Hat Shop are probably equivalent quality and a bit less expensive. Also, the Jaxon Bogart or Detroit are proper fur felt fedoras for only 88 bucks, which is pretty hard to beat for a new hat. Worth the extra cost, in the opinion...
I have noticed that when I dress well while traveling, all sorts of problems are avoided - security tends to treat me with more respect as they assume I am a business traveler, I get better seats in restaurants, etc. There is no down side. In fact, I am sometimes asked for directions in foreign...
Bellhop
I'm pretty sure every picture I've ever seen of a smoking cap (including those in this thread) shows them with a tassel. The one in question doesn't look like it ever had a tassel, as there isn't anyplace where it logically would have been attached. It definitely looks more like a...
The material of the Joe Fedora feels a little like stretchy fabric - not like polyester as you might imagine. The Akubra Capricorn is quite stiff, and has a bit of a crunchy texture when new - massaging it makes the crunch go away, but it does feel like plastic. Both are pretty convincing straw...
This is all I could find, but here you go Juan, er, Bogie:
The only knock against the Joe Fedora is that the brim is a little floppy. It does stay snapped, but a fresh breeze will move it around - I often leave the brim up. Most people think it's straw. I got some tar on it last summer...
Crushable polystraw
The Capricorn is a great hat, not crushable though. I also have and recommend the 'Joe Fedora,' which is a very soft poly hat that looks like Milan straw. It is fully crushable, has a coolmax fabric sweatband and a 2-3/4 brim. It has a somewhat obtrusive windcord (can be cut...
