i do, yeah. i have, though, started using a playing card to help support the weight of my pen. i know i shouldnt do it, but, im a forgetful sort, who doesnt always have pockets. i do though, always have a hat on. i would never have a *pin* other than the ones that come with some older stetsons. im a purist.

how stiff is that spray going to make things? will it damage the felt? these hats are what i would consider soft. one of them is even slightly fuzzy.

Another Risk you run with having a pen in there is if it breaks, the ink will stain & ruin what sounds like you favourite hat, and then you will need a new fedora (And this is how it will start for you )

In regards to the spray stiffener, the more you spray it on, the stiffer the felt becomes. More coatings = more stiffness. It is all subjective at to how stiff you want it.

The Scout Hat spray will probably solve my floppy brim problem too - any idea if it is available in the UK? I don't think we have any Stetson vendors over here. I did try a quick internet search ... as usual the first useful link is a thread in the Lounge. Scout hat stiffener is recommended there too but that doesn't help me get it in the UK. It might even have a different product name here.

That thread also reckons hairspray or hair gel work too .... ??? [huh]

could i take into a haberdasher? would they do something different than, say what i would do with the spray on stuff? ive been meaning to go to the one downtown, anyway, as i have a hat stamped with their store brand from something like seventy years ago. just sort of curious what they'd think of that.

how did they shape these things to begin with? since none of mine feels like they've been treated, even the ones i dont think were ever worn before i got them.

If you take it to an actual brick & motar haberdasher, they will probally tell you that it needs to be cleaned & blocked. This will indeed solve the problem as well as completly clean the felt. They will also more than likely re flange the brim & give it some more "snap". The C & B is more expensive than just spraying the stiffener on it, but you also get more for your money. If you indeed do have an actual haberdasher & not just a clothing cleaners that also does hats, this would be the option that I would recommend.

In some cases, a little steam can re-activate any stiffener that's already present in the felt. If you haven't steamed a hat, I'd highly recommend trying your hand at it. Just keep the leather sweatband out of the direct path of the steam and obviously the felt away from the heat source(if you use a teapot on the stove as I do). In ten minutes I can have a hat re-steamed to an open crown and looking damn good and ready for a new bash.

If your hats don't need cleaning, you might start by simply getting
the hats wet through, reshaping them, and letting them dry.

The pen is asking for trouble...

If your brims get soft first try a fine mist of 91% alcohol (available at any Walmart) and let the hat dry thoroughly. This should reactivate the stiffener that has crystallized.

i recently bought 2 pork-pies, a nice fur felt for "going out on the town" and a cheaper wool felt for everyday knockin' around. the cheaper hat is not going to keep it's shape very long i can tell already, so.... can anyone suggest a good hat stiffener? i hear they sell a spray that, when applied, can add some stiffness. any suggestions?
also, how often does one normally use this product?

Scout felt hat stiffener is one product - I've never used it so can't comment on how often to use it. But I believe you only use stiffener as needed. Here's one source (of many):

a nice grey fedora with wind trolley and welted brim but it is very soft. I may try some of the stiffner to help the crown hold the bash a little better but will try it for a few weeks before going that route. I have never had a hat this soft.. It must be old, the sweatband was marked a shop in Colorado Springs and still had the Stetson price tag of $12.95 present.
